Well, I for one would never be able to write fic for this series (no matter how much the pairing might appeal to me) -- because, y'know, Shakespeare English. I have a hard enough time just understanding it, for God's sake! :\

Shakespeare was never meant to be sacred. He wrote for the masses. That's why his plays are so universal. He wasn't writing for a select few but for all.

Will would probably get a kick out of fanfic for his works if he were still alive.

A part of me likes to think Shakespeare wouldn't care. I think he'd be more shocked his plays are held up as some sort of elite literature than worried about someone insinuating something relating to the way his characters interact.

Lol at me putting words in Shakespeare's mouth like I'd understand how he'd feel. I don't claim to, it's just an idea I like.

Personally I couldn't write fanfic for it because a big thing for me is getting people as in character as possible and I know I couldn't nail the dialogue, which can be a big thing when getting people in character. Also I find it a bit weird trying to turn a play into...no longer a play. That's just me.

There are people who write Bible slash, ffs, I think Shakespeare might even be rather mild on the scale of things that are being "desecrated" by fanfic writers.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The other commenters are absolutely correct about Shakespeare writing for the masses and not being sacred to begin with, not to mention that most of his plots weren't original -- I suspect fanfic is something Shakespeare would, if not explicitly approve of, at least be totally cool with.

Not to mention that, um, Hal/Poins is totally a thing in the text. You can ship them because they're Tom Hiddleston and another hot dude eyefucking in a sauna, that is a perfectly good reason, but also! stuff that is readable from the text! I can't point things out that coherently, because I've only ever talked about it in a Shakespeare class now murky in my memory, but the whole series of plays that make up The Hollow Crown are about, among other things, having good and bad councilors -- good councilors tell the king important things the king needs to hear, and bad councilors are flatterers and hangers-on, with the strong implication that the king keeps them around to sleep with. So the fact that everyone in court is uneasy about the company Hal keeps, and the fact that Falstaff actually sends Hal a letter telling him what bad council Poins is, can absolutely be read as an implication of Hal/Poins. Which it isn't necessarily! But it's a perfectly valid reading.

...aaand that was probably a lot more than the OP cared about hearing! I JUST HAVE A LOT OF HISTORY PLAY FEELINGS.

Almost the entirety of Shakespeare's works are fic of one form or another. I think you're good. :B

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I was indifferent to Hiddleston - nice guy but not my thing - before this. But I'm an English major and like Shakespeare more and more the older I get.

This, this performance, made me realize Hiddleston doesn't just look good but but he's a great actor too and now I love him to pieces. Seriously, I saw the program in a room with my parents and still just jawdropped at this scene. Need slash. Like whoa.

I'm gonna have to watch this series soon. *_* I haven't had time for it though, sooob.

That said, excited for fey king Ben Wishaw and ginger Hiddleston, and pretty much everything to do with The Hollow Crown and fics that will come out of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Most of Shakespeare's plots were taken from history or other sources (for the ones that aren't historical, for example, I think Romeo and Juliet was based of some other play or poem or something, if I remember correctly). So I can't see anything wrong with writing fanfiction of his works.

The understanding I've come to after taking a few courses focusing on the Bard, is that Shakespeare would probably be amused by fanfiction. The concept of intellectual property didn't exactly exist back then, so it was very common to lift ideas from another writer and use them to suit their purposes. In short, not much was sacred to Shakespeare so I wouldn't sweat wanting some guilty please fanfic based on his work.

A fair amount of Shakespeare's work could well be called fanfic in itself.

Oh please, Shakespeare is full of gay (as well as straight and lesbian) innuendo and sex. Why do you think I read Shakespeare?

It's all good.

Hiddles was gorgeous in this, so a big 'Yes' to any smut that might involve him.

You know, I said the day I find a Shakespeare fanfiction about this series I will BITE something. Possibly my desk.
