Re: Choosing Your Fandoms & Fandom Involvement

I tend to end up in fandoms with expanded canons, or one that I don't have anyone to discuss with. That's how I ended up in most of my anime/manga ones: There was no one else to squee with.

Big Bang Theory, Star Trek, and Star Wars, on the other hand, are quoted so often at my parent's house that it's almost impossible to navigate a conversation if you're not aware of them (a huge pain before I started watching BBT, I'll tell you that!). I feel no need to join in with their fandoms because I can discuss them at any time with others who like them irl. Also because I can't shut my family up as easily as turning off teh computer, so I end up knowing about the Vong, the Solo kids, the Trek books, etc. wether I want to or not.

As for expanded canon, what I mean is that I'm far more likely to end up in Avengers, LotR, anime/manga, HP, Andromeda, or anything else with more than one canon source than in something like Avatar, THG (the movie is quite true to the book, without enough difference to make it really compelling for me), The Legend of Drizzt, or Elfquest. I find that the extra veiwpoints makes the world more interesting, gives me something to really sink my teeth into. That discussion is what initialy draws me in.
