Choosing Your Fandoms & Fandom Involvement

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-07-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason, even if I love a show/book/movie/etc., it's uncommon for me to actually feel comfortable participating and lurking in the fandom. Reading fanfiction of most forms of entertainment feels really weird to me, and I don't know why I take to it so much with Harry Potter and Sherlock (and Cabin Pressure, where I often like the fic better than the show) when I feel weird about reading, say, a My Little Pony fanfic (I only like looking at vids/art for that).

Is this common? How about you guys; are you a part of a lot of fandoms or only a few? Do you have certain forms of fanwork that you like in certain fandoms but not others? Are you a part of fandoms where you like the fandom more than the show? Why did you choose your fandoms (or did they choose you? I know mine sort of did)?

Mmm, it depends. I'm in a lot of fandoms (I don't really leave fandoms, I put them on hold), reading fics and looking at pretty art. Episode discussions eh, not so much. Vids, mostly for anime (weirdly enough).
However, there are some fandoms I just cannot read fic for (for example, Harry Potter), because I loved the canon so much that I don't want to read something else.

Sometimes, I like the show more than the fandom, sometimes it's the other way around. And many times, I stumbled upon fic/art and it pulled me into the fandom, then into the source material.

I sort of know how you feel. I read and write fanfic for tons of things, but there's one fandom I would feel incredibly uncomfortable writing fic about; Lord of the Rings. I just can't do it. I love the movies, and The Hobbit is one of my favourite books, but... yeah. LotR fanfic seems weird and wrong to me. The only one I have ever been able to read from start to finish was a one-shot gen crossover, and even though it was a great fic I still felt a little unclean after reading it.

Very few of the shows/books/etc that I love do I actually participate in fandoms of. Some because I like my interpretation and don't want it muddied by fandom. Some because I have no desire for more source - I like the show just as it is. Some because I know that I have an odd or unpopular interpretation of characters and canon and would just get frustrated with fanon.

Actually, there have only been a couple of fandoms I got involved in and most of those were for sort of crappy shows. I loved the shows, but they definitely had faults, and fandom took those faults and fixed and expanded and ran with them. It was glorious.

But then I'm also mostly a lurker so I don't know if my "participation" even counts.

I like that you mentioned no desire for more source because I think that's why I usually don't get into a fandom either.

I'm mostly a lurker too, so your participation definitely counts :D

I tend to end up in fandoms with expanded canons, or one that I don't have anyone to discuss with. That's how I ended up in most of my anime/manga ones: There was no one else to squee with.

Big Bang Theory, Star Trek, and Star Wars, on the other hand, are quoted so often at my parent's house that it's almost impossible to navigate a conversation if you're not aware of them (a huge pain before I started watching BBT, I'll tell you that!). I feel no need to join in with their fandoms because I can discuss them at any time with others who like them irl. Also because I can't shut my family up as easily as turning off teh computer, so I end up knowing about the Vong, the Solo kids, the Trek books, etc. wether I want to or not.

As for expanded canon, what I mean is that I'm far more likely to end up in Avengers, LotR, anime/manga, HP, Andromeda, or anything else with more than one canon source than in something like Avatar, THG (the movie is quite true to the book, without enough difference to make it really compelling for me), The Legend of Drizzt, or Elfquest. I find that the extra veiwpoints makes the world more interesting, gives me something to really sink my teeth into. That discussion is what initialy draws me in.

I only like to read and write fanfic for video game fandoms. I guess it's just because video games spark my imagination and leave a lot up to interpretation. While I'm playing the game I get intrigued by the hints of story and characterization that aren't the main focus of the game, and want to explore that with fanfic and crack theories. But when it comes to books and TV, I don't care that much about interpretating the canon because there's enough storyline in the canon to take it at face value. (Did that make any sense? ;;XD)

But when it comes to things like fanart and fan-videos, I don't have much of a preference. And as far as fandom discussion, I don't usually actively seek it out in any case, but I get dragged into whatever everyone else is talking about. Legend of Korra isn't my favorite show, but all my friends were talking about it, so I ended up forming theories and picking favorite pairings just to have something to talk about with friends. I did the same with Hetalia back when it was popular.

I really only read fic and I only have three main fandoms (maybe four if I count the Avengers, but it's still pretty new): Harry Potter, Fallout, and Star Trek. I've dabbled in other things over the years, but those are the three I've stuck with for longer than six months.

I think, for me, maybe it partially has to do with the potential of the canon to allow authors to produce fics that interest me while still working within the confines of canon (meaning, I'm not so much for AUs- though, there are exceptions). Like, for example, I love time travel fics. Both HP and ST can provide that type of fic without breaking my suspension of disbelief too bad. (Even Falllout can provide that, to some extent. If those doctors in the Big MT can make a sentient, megalomaniacal toaster, then time travel can't be too far off.) Additionally, I think it something to do with my preference for shipping fics. All three of the fandoms have popular ships that really appeal to me. I like other ships in the fandom, but these particular ships just hit the right dynamic and right combination of characters I like to keep me looking for good fic featuring the ship.

I'm pretty similar. There are a ton of things I enjoy, but I usually don't join the fandom. I might give some fic a try, but usually not for long.

Getting into a fandom is unpredictable for me. It's just a spark that's either there or not. It happens more with science fiction fandoms, I find, but even that's not a hard and fast rule by any means.

I usually don't get involved in many fandoms at the same time. I have two main ones right now, and I think that's my limit right now. In the past, I've only ever maintained interest in one at a time.

I'm not really a part of any fandoms. I just don't participate. If I read fic, it's something like Harry Potter that I enjoy, but don't care if it gets "ruined" for me. I just am easily... put off by stuff if I participate in fandom activities. I generally try to get RL friends to watch/read/play whatever so I can discuss it if I need to.

I dunno what it is; I never used to mind it this much, but I just can't stand it. Heck, even reading the comments under webcomics can ruin it (that day's comic, I mean) for me. It's all so fucking negative and "THISCHAR the worst person because [trait I related to]" and it;s so black and white with no acceptance for future growth of a character. Just JUDGE JUDGE JUDGE HATE HATE HATE. Nobody is fucking perfect but the second a character does something not perfect it's like "I used to love LOLCHAR and now I hate her because she did [trial thing a lot of people in their age group have done]" even if they learn from it in the next strip.

I've only realized recently that for the past five or so years, I tend to stick to small fandoms. I *think* it's self consciousness on my part, plus not having to sort through a crapload of source material. Plus, I'm too lazy to maintain a regular fandom presence.

I've been doing that too. I was in Gundam Wing fandom when it was huge, but these days I just don't have the emotional hunger for anything that enormous. It's not purely self-consciousness; it's also a matter of time investment, what kind of social group you want to be a part of, plus plain old interest divergence. I'm still in some old fandoms that are a lot smaller than they used to be.

It's mostly about developing a need for fanon, to me, and that means if I really, completely love something the way it is I usually don't get into fandom for it unless it's very full of open ends that I want to headcanon all over. I only go into fandom if canon is somehow unfulfilling. (eta: the worst case I ever had with this was with Metal Gear; I was a fan for about 9 years before finally diving in to the fandom because MGS4 was so bad, ie unfulfilling, that I needed a fandom to explore it, justify it and 'fix' it for me. I've had a great time in all corners of Metal Gear fandom since, silly me.)

In most fandoms I stick with reading & writing fic and meta, but then there are oddballs; Homestuck just makes me interested in cosplay, Metal Gear Ac!d has almost entirely been about constructing fic in the form of tiny physical scrapbooks (...it's a card-based game, lolgeddit.) There's also a few fandoms where I want to write but not read, or vice versa; that can be a cyclical thing, like I'll read a lot of fic when I first get into the fandom but then I burn out on it and flip to only being interested in writing.

Also, I rarely go for live-action fandoms - only comic-book movies, as far as I can recall, which obv were not originally and always live-action canons. I guess I'm more comfortable when I don't have to worry about actors as well as characters.

I'm still attached to a few fandoms and beloved pairings that I got into ~10 years ago; I guess the strongest fandom attachments are those formed earlier in life. IDK.

It's totally the same for me. I only participate in one fandom (generally one pairing) and there's alot I can't read without feeling disoriented by the non-canonness of it. :\

Normally I'm only active in one fandom at any given time, when I'm obsessed with one source material and it seems impossible for me to focus on anything else. I bounce between two or three fandoms, but my obsesion with the fandom I'm currently in may vary from weeks to years.
I usually are drawn to a fandom after I've enjoyed canon and I want to know more about the characters. I started with anime fandoms, though I've ventured in videogame fandoms and very rarely in movie fandoms.
In most of my fandoms, I focus on writing and reading fics, but rarely I check other forms of fanworks. Sometimes I participate in forums and communities, which I really enjoy.
Now the really funny thing is that my latest fandom is the complete opposite to what I usually do. I didn't chose it; I stumbled on a piece of fanart of a fic, it intrigued me, I proceeded to read said fic and it blowed my mind, THEN I checked the source material. Also is the only fandom where I tried to do other things than fanfiction (fanart for example), since I've found it's impossible for me to write any fic about it (contrary of what I do in other fandoms, but its canon just amazes me too much to even begin to try to write something about it). Unfortunately, I've gotten the virtual equivalent of rolling tumbleweeds in the desert for my efforts (that still has me somewhat surprised, it seems overall it's a very active and supporting fandom), which has dampen my enthusiasm to participate somewhat, so I've decided to just lurk and enjoy what others create in it, because despite my personal experience, this is also the only fandom where I enjoy it so much more than the source material (which is saying something).

I don't know about common, but I'd say it's normal. I used to be really into participating in fandoms, but mostly I now just enjoy it on its own and lurk around occasionally. There are exceptions where I'm more involved, but still not the same extent as I used to be. And I have many interests, so even if I wanted to be heavily involved with them all I'd have to be getting paid for it to be worth all the time put into it. XD

Yeah, I didn't exactly choose fandoms either. I just liked the source so much that I went seeking for more information and then ended up somewhere. Seems to be what usually happens.

I rarely do fanfic. I don't even have time to read/watch/play the primary works.

In fact, it's probably more reasonable to say that I'm a genre fan than a fan of specific works, so I'm always moving on to the next novel, game, or series.

If I really like a particular show/book - I don't get involved in the fandom. I might lurk here and there, but I generally avoid the internet. I treat it like a private bit of enjoyment that I'm not inclined to share or talk about. If I'm apathetic about it and liked the world, ie Harry Potter/Pokemon/anne mccaffrey, I'll probably get involved.

If I'm in the middle, say a temporary obsession, I'll talk about it, burn my way through fics and art, rave about it - then it will fizzle out and I'll return to my usual fandom involvement with world building in fandoms where I don't give a shit about the characters.
