Re: Choosing Your Fandoms & Fandom Involvement

It's mostly about developing a need for fanon, to me, and that means if I really, completely love something the way it is I usually don't get into fandom for it unless it's very full of open ends that I want to headcanon all over. I only go into fandom if canon is somehow unfulfilling. (eta: the worst case I ever had with this was with Metal Gear; I was a fan for about 9 years before finally diving in to the fandom because MGS4 was so bad, ie unfulfilling, that I needed a fandom to explore it, justify it and 'fix' it for me. I've had a great time in all corners of Metal Gear fandom since, silly me.)

In most fandoms I stick with reading & writing fic and meta, but then there are oddballs; Homestuck just makes me interested in cosplay, Metal Gear Ac!d has almost entirely been about constructing fic in the form of tiny physical scrapbooks (...it's a card-based game, lolgeddit.) There's also a few fandoms where I want to write but not read, or vice versa; that can be a cyclical thing, like I'll read a lot of fic when I first get into the fandom but then I burn out on it and flip to only being interested in writing.

Also, I rarely go for live-action fandoms - only comic-book movies, as far as I can recall, which obv were not originally and always live-action canons. I guess I'm more comfortable when I don't have to worry about actors as well as characters.

I'm still attached to a few fandoms and beloved pairings that I got into ~10 years ago; I guess the strongest fandom attachments are those formed earlier in life. IDK.
