I've been banned from three different places in my history in fandom (2006-2012), and I've decided to take it with a bit of twisted pseudo-pride. Like, "lol, I'm bold enough to do moronic shit on a banhammer-worthy scale!" the way you'd think about stuff you did that got you in detention in school.

Fanfic Disappointment

I generally try to hold off on reading WIPs until they are complete. But, there was one fic with a very enticing summary that I couldn't resist. It was being updated rather frequently and I figured I'd try it out. It was very enjoyable and I eagerly awaited updates, checking back every day or so. And, then it took a narrative turn that seemed so out of the blue and very OOC for the particular characters involved-and so wrong. I read a little further to see if maybe one of the characters was being manipulated or manipulative somehow, but no. So, I'm completely soured on the fic and I haven't checked back in weeks. Which sucks, because I was really enjoying it until that point. 

It feels worse to be let down by a WIP for some reason. Maybe because with a completed fic I might have known through the fandom grapevine that OOC-ish things happen that I won't like. I don't know. It's weird. 

Has this ever happened to you? Did you keep on reading? Did you tell tell the author that you didn't like the narrative turn?

Does anyone know where I could download the ~brilliance~ that is 50 Shades of Grey? PDF, ebook reader, whatever. I just want to read it without paying for it, unless I actually end up enjoying it/I end up getting horny from it, which is highly unlikely.

In a comment on one of yesterday's secrets, someone mentioned how "women-dominated fandom spaces tend to obsess more over being nice and non-blunt and diplomatic-bordering-on-spineless." And now I am wondering if maybe THAT'S why so many people in fandom are so obnoxiously passive-aggressive.

Saying anything that could be interpreted as "mean" is unacceptable, so if we're going to say stupid insulting shit, we should rephrase it to sound nicer!

I can't stand that sort of mentality. I find overt rudeness much less annoying than sugarcoated douchebaggery.

Just because you politely say something assholish doesn't make it any less assholish. Why is this so difficult to comprehend?

Choosing Your Fandoms & Fandom Involvement

For some reason, even if I love a show/book/movie/etc., it's uncommon for me to actually feel comfortable participating and lurking in the fandom. Reading fanfiction of most forms of entertainment feels really weird to me, and I don't know why I take to it so much with Harry Potter and Sherlock (and Cabin Pressure, where I often like the fic better than the show) when I feel weird about reading, say, a My Little Pony fanfic (I only like looking at vids/art for that).

Is this common? How about you guys; are you a part of a lot of fandoms or only a few? Do you have certain forms of fanwork that you like in certain fandoms but not others? Are you a part of fandoms where you like the fandom more than the show? Why did you choose your fandoms (or did they choose you? I know mine sort of did)?

I went to the salon today and got mine dyed a lovely dark, glossy blue. It looks black in dim lighting and bright blue in direct sunlight. It's so pretty! I didn't realize I could do this! My hairdresser didn't even need to use bleach on me. I have night elf hair!
