Can someone explain to me why I feel so bad about a site that banned me for no reason that is at all consistent with its prior history of banninations? Why do I care so much?

I would say but I'm thinking about making a plea to the HGIC to be let back in. Not to apologize, because I feel I have nothing to apologize for, but to point out the inconsistency between my banning and other bannings that happened about the same time.

And something tells me naming it again would hurt my chances...but again, not sure why I care that much given the treatment I received when I was ousted.

Except you don't know if it was unfair or not. Maybe nobody had broken that rule before, or that rule wasn't enforced but now is being enforced or sth? Like with ff.net?

if you visited the site often and had invested a part of yourself in it, it's normal to feel that way.

worry if weeks, months, years, etc. go by and you still feel like this (as opposed to just missing it or reminiscing fondly for a few seconds and then going on with your day)

I've been banned from three different places in my history in fandom (2006-2012), and I've decided to take it with a bit of twisted pseudo-pride. Like, "lol, I'm bold enough to do moronic shit on a banhammer-worthy scale!" the way you'd think about stuff you did that got you in detention in school.

Inconsistency sucks but the only real way to deal with it is to stick with mods you trust. Mods are humans, not robots, and some of them suck worse than others at pretending otherwise.

The TWoP mods have always been inconsistent, but I wasn't aware they were really much of a fan factor. I hardly ever hear of that site anymore except for the ocassional secret. It's just the above comment that reminded me.

I was going to say it's fallout from Mark Watches, since that's so recent and got so ugly.

I know nothing about you or your situation, but when it happened to me (well, I left rather than "correct" behavior that i didn't feel deserved banning anyway) it was because I'd really invested myself in that community and tried hard to follow its (SJW-y) rules. It hurt to be told that I wasn't enough, to be deemed one of the bad outsiders.

In the end, though, it made me reevaluate my whole life. I mean, not that my whole life revolved around one specific online community. But just... the whole idea that these people I'd invested so much of myself in would do that, that it would end in "Aw, you've been faithful to our ideas for so long, don't act like that and make us ban you!" That opened my eyes, and yeah, I think it being so eye-opening changed my life.

And that reevaluating led me to actually get involved in real-world activism, where it's not about words but about housing, jobs, and civil rights. It was wonderfully freeing.

I don't know if it's an SJ type community or fandom, or if the mods are dicks or if you did something bannable or something in between. But if my experience is at all applicable: sometimes small communities can get really restrictive and even culty.

Cults purge their impure members a lot.

Speaking of, hi again. I simply dropped out of there because everyone I was interested in talking to had already been banned or quit for the same reason you did. Sad, really.

Right, so, obviously I don't know the story here.

But I'm the sort of person who hates to get in trouble, even if it's not my fault. So I can understand being bothered.

Also, on a pettier note, when you get banned from a site, it can feel like the mods have had the last word.

Fanfic rants? I got banned from there! I had no idea wtf a macro was. I guess I should have Googled it, but honestly, being banned was the best thing that could have happened. That community gave me writer's block, paranoia, and anxiety, but it was so wankishly addictive that I couldn't quit reading it.

Because it sucks to get banned. Because it sucks knowing a place you enjoy is run by power tripping mods and admins. Because it sucks having someone not like you before they even get to know you.

Once I was banned from a yaoi publisher's forum...only I'd never commented there. My e-mail address was banned and when I asked why, I never got a reply. I can only guess it was because hotmail addresses were banned to prevent spam.
