Haha, my rare pairing is basically my OTP. (Haplo/Alfred from Death Gate). It's not popular because the series itself isn't as popular, even though I personally think there's a huge amount of basis in the canon, particularly starting in book three. (Maybe even book 1 if you're over-analyzing all of their interactions like me). I don't think I've been more in love with a friendship in media then with these two, which just gets more shiptastic as it goes on. And when Alfred is missing in book five (authors, why?) Haplo is just thinking about him half the time anyway, and MISSING him. D: Heck, they shared SOULS. They have a closer connection to each other than anyone else, even Haplo's own love interest, Marit, which is interesting because this was outright stated in the last book too when Alfred is talking with Haplo via mind link and Marit can't hear any of their conversation.

And the moment when Haplo finally admits that he thinks of Alfred as a dear friend it's like...ow, my heart. Antagonistic enemies turned best friends is a lovely thing. I almost want Wies and Hickman to write a sequel with them again, but considering they actually did for another stand-alone series of theirs (Darksword) and it was... pretty bad, yeah. Do I sound obsessive? Yeah, a little. I can't help it. Apologies. I really need fanfic.

I do have a couple of other rare pairs, but I guess this is the one I care about the most. *is a sad, sad individual*

Dear god I love Death Gate Cycle. I think it's Weis & Hickman's best collaboration (though I admit a deep personal fondness for the Rose of the Prophet series) and I've always been a little disappointed that it's overshadowed by Dragonlance. (Which I enjoy, but nowhere near as much as Death Gate.)

The Haplo/Alfred dynamic really is a fantastically written relationship. I can't think of any other relationship in any kind of media that is similar in terms of evolution and what they ultimately represent to each other.

...I think I need to re-read the series now. c:

I just read Rose of the Prophet! I liked it a lot too, and it was neat seeing a different setting than what these two usually write. Mathew and Zohra were both pretty awesome, and Pukah was hilarious and loveable. XD Dragonlance was my first love, and I still love it immensely as well, especially Caramon and Raistlin and their sad, deeply unhealthy relationship. But yeah, Death Gate is my top favorite of theirs.

Haplo/Alfred is simply the best. It figures that my OTP would be rare. XD

Haha, I've seen some people be afraid of reading the series again because of the prose that can be a bit clunky at times. I dunno, I re-read it recently and still love it, personally because I think the characters just make up for the flaws in their writing. That might be just me though~ (Re-read it anyway!)
