Fanfic Disappointment

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-07-24 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally try to hold off on reading WIPs until they are complete. But, there was one fic with a very enticing summary that I couldn't resist. It was being updated rather frequently and I figured I'd try it out. It was very enjoyable and I eagerly awaited updates, checking back every day or so. And, then it took a narrative turn that seemed so out of the blue and very OOC for the particular characters involved-and so wrong. I read a little further to see if maybe one of the characters was being manipulated or manipulative somehow, but no. So, I'm completely soured on the fic and I haven't checked back in weeks. Which sucks, because I was really enjoying it until that point.

It feels worse to be let down by a WIP for some reason. Maybe because with a completed fic I might have known through the fandom grapevine that OOC-ish things happen that I won't like. I don't know. It's weird.

Has this ever happened to you? Did you keep on reading? Did you tell tell the author that you didn't like the narrative turn?

Sorry for the tl;dr!

It's happened to me sooo many times, it's not just you.

And it hurts a lot when it happens in the tens or twenties chapters, so it hits once you're invested! At least if it happens in the first few chapters, you can bail out more peacefully.

For some, I try to shoulder on, but most of the time I just leave. There are a few that had me curious about how they would end, so I give them a few months to check back on new updates and skim through them to see what happened to the characters.

Sometimes I do tell the author, and they're mostly all neutralish "sorry you didn't like it".

Oof this about the tens or twenties chapters for anything. If the story starts moving too slow or it becomes bad or something you just feel bad about not finishing it. I recently bailed out on one forty chapters in and I felt really guilty.

I bailed on one in its seventies. I feel ya. :(

Yeah. I was reading an abused!Harry Potter fic awhile ago, and it was one where an actually very in character Snape discovers the abuse over Christmas break. It starts out as a very good story between them as Snape's perception of Harry as a spoiled brat begin to shift, but then all of a sudden Snape's left Voldemort's circle and he and Remus are co-guardians/mentors of Harry's and Harry starts calling Snape "Dad" because the ghost of James said it was OK or some such and I was just like whatever.

Your description made me lol so, so hard. Harry starts calling Snape "Dad" because James' ghost said so. YEAH OKAY, lol.

"Yeah. I was reading an abused!Harry Potter fic awhile ago, and it was one where an actually very in character Snape discovers the abuse "

"It starts out as a very good story between them as Snape's perception of Harry as a spoiled brat begin to shift"

you know, I've read some fics that handle these initial parts well but it seems that authors don't know how to handle snape after the "revelation" part

pretty much all the fics I've read of this sort go to shit once snape moves past the "holy shit, I had it all wrong" stage

How long ago was that? Because during the Three Year Summer there were so many fics answering the Severitus challenge (where Snape turns out to be Harry's father) that it was practically a meme.

Then again, my reaction to most of those fics was that they got the Dursleys wrong, so I'm kind of strange anyway. (Yeah, I wrote "Yet Another Snape Meets the Dursleys Story" in another lifetime. But I plead innocent. I didn't make Snape into Harry's dad!)

oh god

I think I've read this.

I dropped it once we hit the "dad" shit. Why can't Snape ever turn into a supportive adult figure without all the adopting/true son things? It really sours a fic for me and throws me for a loop. He can be a supportive adult figure without wanting to be a father or lover >:[

a similar one threwq me for a loop involved both moody and snape adopting potter, then something about elf heritage? It was interesting up until the dad shit

What fandom is the fic for?
Also, that's happened to me with Truthfully (Avengers fandom). It was crack, so I wasn't expecting much beyond the hilarious premise. It turned out to be a VERY enjoyable read, and I got really hooked on it, but these days it's woobie!Loki all over the place. If he ends up in a relationship with Dr. Moran (it seems to be heading that way), I'll be VERY pissed. I kinda see her as a positive authority figure for him, not as his freaking gf.

Oh God, I know that fic and I really liked it, but it's been a while since I've looked to see if it's been updated. If Loki's therapist becomes his girlfriend, ugh. I'm with you. Hearing that ruins it for me.

Yeah, it's happened. Usually I don't say anything on a fic if the characters become really OOC though. I usually only comment on fics if I really like them.

I read about 99% Sherlock fic right now and this happens far more than it should right after Sherlock and John decide to start having sex. All of a sudden I'm like "Who are these people and where did the characters go?"

But it also comes down to personal opinion I suppose.

Also if the writing style is good enough or the story is interesting or only one character is out of character and I don't have anything better to do I frequently just power through and read it anyway.

Sorry you invested so much time in the WIP though :/

I can remember one time a wip I was reading became too much and I had to just give up. I felt pretty bad, too, because I had really liked the beginning of it and would even frequently comment on chapters.

This happened to me pretty darn often in a certain fandom of mine. The fic would be AMAZING and I'd read the updates as soon as they were posted, and after a few weeks (or even months) something would happen that was a 'no go' for me and I just quit. Since then I've only read fic now and then, and most of those have been one-shots or completed fics.

This is why I mistrust longfic. It starts out awesome and then around chapter six or so it dies, unless the author has a clear vision for what s/he's going to do with it.

This doesn't quite fit the bill of what you're talking about, but I did read this really, really long HP fic, and after I'd already gotten seventy million chapters into what was quite a good fic, Harry manages to create a sentient teddy bear that spends the remaining eleventy million chapters hanging onto Harry's leg and randomly punching Theodore Nott in the face. *sigh* why, why, why, HP Writer? Why? Such a good story otherwise.

If it's something I enjoyed, or got invested in, I keep reading because I have a problem. It's too late to back button now! I have to see it through to its terribly melodramatic end!

just like heroes, being human uk, and too huge portions of food that is served at a restaurant 8(

Being Human UK! ARG! I haven't watched season 4 yet, but season 3. Whhhhhyyyy?

At this point I'm only going for season 4 just to ogle Eyebrows Mcwerewolf. Those eyebrows... sigh.

Yes. There's this fic that's basically a classic in my fandom, written by a multifandom BNF. It's really popular and it's hilarious in the beginning. Around the middle point, it became a confused mess. Basically, it promised to be a mistaken identity plot that segued into the "pretending to be lovers" trope but it turned out to be something totally different.

Re: Fanfic Disappointment

Something like this happens to pretty much every tv series that goes past season 3.

Re: Fanfic Disappointment

(Anonymous) 2012-07-25 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! Danny Phantom did it in just three seasons!

(the pain will it ever go away otz)

I mean, it was never excellent, but it had some good ideas and some episodes were pretty good, but then the creator and one of the main writers had some disagreements (the creator wanted episodic comedy a la FOP, the other writer wanted to make it a little more serious action adventure like some plot lines had hinted at, and even continue one of the fan-favorite plot-lines that was left hanging), and then season 3 brought in new writers and, well, they weren't exactly bad writers, but it showed that they were new to the series and to these characters, and, yeah.

(This is frustrating because the internet fanbase seemed to prefer the "serious" action adventure angle way more than the comedic angle, which was often shoe-horned in during what could have otherwise been fairly impressive serious scenes.)

Okay, I'll stop now.
