There are Western pop stars whose attractiveness is unconventional or, can we say, not universally acknowledged. Female examples aren't many, but they exist: Adele, Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Madonna, Cher. Does K-pop have parallels to them? If so, I haven't seen them...

Madonna was pretty universally recognized as hot until she hit her forties (because ageism).

adele has a very traditionally pretty face and she's not that overweight

Not now; she lost a good deal of weight over the last couple years. You can't really tell as much by the videos, either, because they used a lot of camera tricks to try to avoid showing her weight. But if you do a Google image for Adele 2008, you can see that she definitely was heavier. Most of the photos focus on her face, and she wears a lot of black and dark colors (which are slimming).

This is a comparison of photos of her over the past 4 years.

So... no, she's not now, but she was when she first started to become popular, which from what I can gather is something she started working on for her health after having throat surgery last year.

How attractive an individual finds them isn't really the point. The point is, they're different from the blonde-haired schoolgirl pop-singer model and from each other in a way that K-pop singers don't.

Who doesn't think Elly Jackson is attractive? I've had a crush on her for years and think she's gorgeous.

Oh, i think she's amazing looking, but she's not 'conventionally pretty', you know? A lot of people sneered at Sinéad O'Connor, but if you watch that 'Nothing Compare 2 U' vid, where the camera is just mostly focusing on her face, you can see she is frigging gorgeous.

But because she shaved her head, people couldn't see past that.

Further proving my point, thank you. Again, how attractive someone personally finds these individuals isn't my main point. They're are only intended to illustrate that you don't necessarily have to come from a cloning vat to be a successful Western female pop star. I don't believe the same is true for K-pop.
