Re: is everyone an "idea" person or

Any literary agent would tell you that good ideas are a dime a dozen. Anyone can come up with one good idea; not everyone, however, can execute it.

See, ideas just come to you. Sometimes you can help them along (in terms of writing, this means paying attention to the world around you, learning from other people's works, doing writing exercises, keeping track of idea snippets so you can pull them together--in other words, "training your idea muscle," as it were), but you can't just voluntarily, on the spot, produce a good idea. It just happens, spontaneously.

Good execution, on the other hand, is never spontaneous. It's the product of practice, hard word, talent, and persistence. You have to put effort into it. Even if you're naturally talented and can write well without effort, you still have to sit down and write the bloody thing. And the vast majority of people can't do it effortlessly, which means they not only need to put effort into the actual sit-down-and-write aspect, but also in making the writing good. It's a lot more effort than an idea just coming to you.

In other words: Most people are "idea people," at least in this sense. Sure, there are some people who can write skillfully but have the creativity of a brick. But in general, the interesting premise is the easy part.

In relative difficulty level:

The idea: --
Execution: ----------------------------
Good execution: ---------------------------------------------------------

That's a huge jump in difficulty, right? Making the jump from idea to execution is hard enough. Making the second jump, to good execution, is beyond most people's ability and determination (and, often, they aren't even aware that the third level of "good execution," as opposed to just "execution," even exists--or, more accurately, they think they've made the jump to "good execution" all in one fell swoop, not realizing that they've really only jumped to "execution").

This is a very good comment, thank you for putting it in perspective so easily!

Hmmm... food for thought, anon. I'm the type of person who has writing talent and skill (and is very careful about grammar and whatnot), but who isn't creative in the least. I don't have a single unique idea. It's pretty irritating :/

You could browse through fanfiction archives and see through the summaries and see what piques your interest.

In fact, I implore you to do so.

Heck, you could even post what fandoms your write for and ask for plot bunnies to write, or if you're into original works, as for people for ideas to do something.

I don't think anyone here is the "this was my idea you have to give me 50% of whatever your book earns I deserve it" type. (At least I hope so. D:)

You could scroll through some kink memes and fill prompts.

I can't tell you how comforting it is to know that I'm not the only one like this. I can't come up with my own ideas to save my life, but people seem to really enjoy my writing, both online and off. I suggest filling prompts on kink memes if your fandom has one or maybe even asking about plot ideas people might like to see in an anon meme. It's worked pretty well for me thus far.

Plus, if you already have followers of some sort, taking requests every now and then totally makes their day.
