If it helps you feel better, the people you see in the tumblr and who are helplessly (this distinction is important; not every user there is like this) attracted to that site are mostly pre-teens, teenagers, and some adults whose real lives make internet socializing look easier and more appealing.

Getting some semblance of attention or popularity is easy in dA, you just need to find what is popular (fanart, anime, yaoi/borderline porn, furry art, mostly in that order), and crank it out with lots of fanpandering, and boom, you are getting attention!

Go to any page that has a lot of traffic, and you'll see mostly empty compliments, a little drama (depending on the user), and very few, if any at all, real constructive criticism.

It's a very "hugs and kisses and cuddles" environment (except when drama erupts), and the kind of people who crave that so desperately that they will sink so many time and emotions into the site, well, you can imagine how they are.

I really want to make clear that not all pre-teens, teenagers, adults, etc. with an account there are like this; what you see here are the very, very vocal minority; most people seem to lurk or not make much of a splash.

Oh, I actually have a DA account, and I lurk occasionaly there, so I know what you're saying about the site is true, but I was talking about the Tumblr site. The problem I have with that site is their are basically filtering the idiocy of DA and giving you a full concentrate of fail. I mean, I can tolerate the occasional drama on DA, but actually searching for it? Bad idea.

To be honest, I don't think I could get more than a few doses of the site every now and then when the mood strikes. It's easy to snark at it when you're bored, but when experiences encountering these or similar people hit a nerve and it's all still fresh, I would want to avoid all that, yeah.
