Sounds like an interesting site in a train-wreck sort of way, but seems like one of those sites that would destroy further my fate on humanity so... better to keep my distance. :(

If it helps you feel better, the people you see in the tumblr and who are helplessly (this distinction is important; not every user there is like this) attracted to that site are mostly pre-teens, teenagers, and some adults whose real lives make internet socializing look easier and more appealing.

Getting some semblance of attention or popularity is easy in dA, you just need to find what is popular (fanart, anime, yaoi/borderline porn, furry art, mostly in that order), and crank it out with lots of fanpandering, and boom, you are getting attention!

Go to any page that has a lot of traffic, and you'll see mostly empty compliments, a little drama (depending on the user), and very few, if any at all, real constructive criticism.

It's a very "hugs and kisses and cuddles" environment (except when drama erupts), and the kind of people who crave that so desperately that they will sink so many time and emotions into the site, well, you can imagine how they are.

I really want to make clear that not all pre-teens, teenagers, adults, etc. with an account there are like this; what you see here are the very, very vocal minority; most people seem to lurk or not make much of a splash.

Oh, I actually have a DA account, and I lurk occasionaly there, so I know what you're saying about the site is true, but I was talking about the Tumblr site. The problem I have with that site is their are basically filtering the idiocy of DA and giving you a full concentrate of fail. I mean, I can tolerate the occasional drama on DA, but actually searching for it? Bad idea.

To be honest, I don't think I could get more than a few doses of the site every now and then when the mood strikes. It's easy to snark at it when you're bored, but when experiences encountering these or similar people hit a nerve and it's all still fresh, I would want to avoid all that, yeah.

same anon as above

I should also add that the owners of the site are not paragons of maturity themselves either, and that the moderators and staff that want to and actually do their job well are often obstructed by the way the site works and burn out very quickly.

sa

There has also been controversy over their porn rule; porn isn't admitted, only "tasteful/artistic nudity", but some of the staff turn a blind eye to it if they like it.

And there is more, but that's what came to mind right away.

What I'm trying to say, is that how the people high up behave reflects very heavily on their userbase. If the mods actually moderated properly, you wouldn't have so much of what you see on that tumblr. (But of course, if they moderated properly they would have to ban people and ~offend their sensibilities how dare you you elitist bluh bluh bluh~ and then they wouldn't have so many people signing up and giving them their money, so...)

You have a working Internet connection. How come you still have some of this so-called faith on humanity (yuck)? As far as I was aware, that is the stuff of legends. Or RL.

AYRT

To be honest, it's as thin as the ozone layer and full on giant holes everywhere, but I managed to recover a tiny, tiny little lately, soooo, I wouldn't lose what little I have left of it.

In RL is completely non existant for me, though.

not ayrt

op who posted the tumblr link in fact

My hope for humanity has had its stumbles, but it seems firmer now that I acknowledge that some people are just dicks, but trying to be a good person for the other good persons out there is worth it.
