Re: Mentioning gender-related stuff (or fandom) IRL?

I hate when this happens, but at the same time, people live and learn. Last fall a coworker of mine got outed as transsexual among a small group of gossiping supervisors, and I swear some people were sounding like it was the most exciting thing that had happened to them all year. :/ But you know what? They were then faultlessly respectful to him and didn't tell anyone else at all.

On the whole people are (or at least want others to think they are) nice to each other, at least within social situations. It's pretty well-established that the main factor that influences how people feel about LGBT rights is whether they know anyone who's out as LGBT, and I'm sure the same goes for many other identities; of course, in the meantime, it's not always safe to be out.

I have a general rule for discussing this kind of topic with non-informed people and it's to avoid jargon at all costs, especially stuff like privilege; just talking about fairness and respect gets through to pretty much everyone who it's worth getting through to.

This seems like a good idea. All the jargon might as well be an exotic foreign language for the people who have never come across it before (of which there are so, so many off-line).

I'm glad you do this!

Agreed. Jargon makes people uncomfortable with the topic even more uncomfortable with it.
