(I was waiting to see if OP answered, but I don't want to leave you hanging either... OP, correct me if I'm wrong!)

No, it's not a rule. If you're physically threatened, you can fight back. If your property is threatened, you can't use deadly force. Then again, in Western Europe, it is very rare to have a gun at home, and even rarer to use it. Practically everyone I know has never seen a gun up close, much less fired one. Vigilantism is really not deeply rooted in the society I live in.

I'm American, and the only time I've ever seen a gun was when one of my housemates was a policeman. The US really doesn't have a gun in every household, and I would say most people I know have never seen a gun up close.

Yeah, this is what most non-Americans don't understand; they think that a statistic like "Americans own thirteen guns for every man, woman and child in the country" means "every man, woman and child in the States owns thirteen guns." They don't get that there's a HUGE number of Americans who never have and never will own guns and then a much smaller number who drive the average WAY up by collecting guns like we collect JPEGs in fap folders.
