Go suck an egg.

Well it's a good thing nobody shot anybody at a screening of Avengers, because then you'd have to cry every time you turned on the internet.

...I think your feelings are normal, but I'm just saying that it's pretty easy to avoid mention of this movie if you can't handle them right now.

i think being horrified at a tragedy is pretty normal even if it didn't directly affect you

Yea, this. Maybe one day the two won't be so interconnected for you. Not saying you'll forget it happened, just...with time the effect it has on you might lessen.

I agree.

Mm. Not gonna lie, the stock market scene was kind of awkward to get through. You could almost feel everyone in the theater shifting uncomfortably, hoping it would be over soon.

You're horrified and sickened by a recent tragedy that you acknowledge did not happen to you. Nothing wrong with that. Now, if you were making it about you, rather than posting one secret about it, there would be a problem.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it could be worse.
You could be like me: turn on the news, think 'Batmassacre' and then giggle at the pun. And then realize that you're actually a terrible person and possibly a sociopath.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
You sound edgy.

I think thanks to social media you can feel very closely for a tragedy even when you're not personally involved in it or know anyone involved in it.

Like reading the last tweets or blog entries or people tweeting about loved ones still missing that can hit you pretty bad and it's a lot harder not to be emotionally effected by tragedies like this than when you simply hear about them on the news.

So no, it's nothing wrong with you feeling that way, give yourself time *hugs*

I envy the level of empathy you can muster for people you don't know.

Feeling bad about the Aorora happenings is normal and human. But try not to work yourself into hysterics over it. It is very possible to put things in a positive feedback loop, where you mull over and ramp up your negative emotions every time you think of the tragedy. But there really is absolutely no good for anyone if you go deliberately traumatizing yourself over it. That's not good for your mental health nor respectful for the victims.

Heaven forbid that something should REMIND you of something that depresses you. OH GOD, DON'T REMIND ME!!! Don't remind me of that incident that actually had nothing to do with me whatsoever!!!

It bums me out that people like you are going to let this asshole ruin the movie for you. It doesn't matter that you wouldn't have seen it or not. It's just not fair to the hundreds of people that worked on it that you'll look down on it forever or link it to the stupid shooting just because it happened to be where the guy chose to go on his little tirade.

Life isn't fair, and people react like people. I live in Littleton, and I know I'm never going to see that movie. It's not OP's fault that it's tainted in their mind, and they are not required to soldier on for the sake of a damn movie.

No, that's totally understandable. You totally have that right; it's in the public consciousness and it's very hard not to associate the two (which is incredibly unfortunate, since they really have nothing to do with one another & it's an excellent movie, but it can't be helped). That's certainly better than not caring or saying "it's annoying that people are ruining the fun of the movie with this tragedy" or something. I saw it at midnight and therefore didn't find out about Aurora 'til the next day, and I'm seeing it again this Sunday; wondering if the vibe will be different. :\

It's okay to feel horrified by this.

I was really upset about the death of the baby until the ages were released and the youngest was 6. (Still pretty horrible, but slightly more acceptable in my mind than someone shooting a baby)

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right. You have absolutely no right to feel that bad about it if you're uninvolved. I guess it's great that you're sympathetic and all, and it sucks that you can't seem to help it, but that doesn't really make it alright, imo.

You feel anxious and sick about it? Okay. So do something about it. Donate a little to the families, send a condolence card or something, but just sitting there bawwwing about it DOES make it seem like you're making it all about you instead of about the people actually affected.

Totally different story if your anxiety is just sympathetic fear for your own safety, of course.
