Korra fandom musings

(Anonymous) 2012-07-27 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So tumblr is now aflame with wank over a few statements Bryke made. [Basically: Oh, we'll piss off someone no matter what we do. We write the show we want to.] Seems pretty bland, right? Well these simple statements have unleashed the korrapocolypse on tumblr. I found one very amusing post by one fangirl who said "How dare they ignore our essays and our "reasonable arguments" and hurt our feelings!" and then in their next breath went on to rant about Bryke and how any person who likes Korra just wants to suck Mako's dick. Reasonable, yeah.

I'm no Bryke fan, I feel they aren't perfect, but the level of insanity and straight ungrateful behavior has just hit a peak for me. I get the feeling most of these people had already made their headcanons, and felt betrayed when the show wasn't everything they wanted it to be. A lot of these essays I've seen are full of subjective views and over exaggerated points, too.

Oh Avatar fandom, don't stop being crazy.

and felt betrayed when the show wasn't everything they wanted it to be

And I guess this is the, what is it called, "crux of the problem"?

From the time the premise was first revealed, it sounded a lot like it would be a mature show that focused on actual societal issues and personal growth and stuff, not the show that wants to be a mature show on actual societal issues and personal growth and stuff that doesn't know how to compromise that and being presumably aimed at a young-ish audience and ends up as an undecided mess.

While I don't think the denouement and ending of Korra were handled very well, I don't get what caused people to get into such a shitstorm around it all. All the antagonism and taking it personally...

Yeah, that's the part I have a hard time swallowing. "They hurt our feelings!" (Direct quote) How? Because your expectations weren't meant/Borra didn't happen? Sheesh

Korra, to me, sounds like it had lots of lofty expectations placed upon it by people. And with something like that, some people are bound to be disappointed no matter what happens.

(Bryke comes off to me as 'damned if they do, damned if they don't' with this whole thing, but that's strictly imho. I have no real feelings about them one way or the other)

Fandom overreacts to everything.

imo they could have dropped that asami/mako part of the love triangle and used that time to focus on the group friendships.

but what's done is done and now i'm just hoping for more friendship moments next season

eh i also wasn't really satisfied with how they wrapped up the whole equalist thing but i think i had really high expectations on that

I hope this thing doesn't run as bad as the worst "hold the line" stuff over in Mass Effect. I hate losing two fandoms in one year.

Here is the one example I mentioned. Warning: It's full of caps, irrational fangirl rants, and whining.

Oh, we'll piss off someone no matter what we do. We write the show we want to

I'm not a member of tumblr but if this is truly what he said then I'm kind of disappointed. When you have the majority of the fandom upset about your product then I'd say that'd be a bit of a problem, one which should be evaluated and look to be corrected in the future rather than a brush off of, "Well, we're just gonna do what we want to do." That kind of behavior is only going to alienate their fan base. With that being said I understand not everyone is going to be happy, but the sheer disappointment and upset I've seen in the Korra fandom goes a lot farther than the silly shipping wars I saw with Avatar.

They said they were 'damned if we do, damned if we don't' basically. I'm sorry, but the fandom is being irrational and plain butthurt right now. They hyped up the show months before it aired. Decided all these things that must happen!, and when the showed finished and it wasn't what they had made up in their heads, they flipped.

Oh I'm sure the fandom was. Generally fandoms are :P I tend to stay away from tumblr for exactly that reason, I've heard its very wanky.

If that was what Bryka said then that makes a bit more sense. If they were truly like, "We're going to write whatever we want and don't care what others say," then yea, not very cool to be that insensitive to the very people that are your pay check.

Ugh. I enjoy LOK (I've seen most of it so far. . .don't judge me, during the school year I was very busy and then I got a bit upset that the internet spoiled the ending for me so I haven't watched it yet.), but I wouldn't get involved in the fandom AT ALL. There were shipping wars before the show even began; Bryke is right, they are damned if they do, damned if they don't. Even though there are genuine complaints about the series, I feel like it's a good decision for Bryke to keep on doing what they're doing, because I think a lot of these complaints come down to the fact that Bryke only thought there was going to be one LOK season and they were very limited by this fact.

I disagree. They were very limited, yes, but the fact remains that it's not impossible to write a very tight script for very little time that flows much more smoothly than LoK did. Their ability to write in a more concise fashion was a bigger limit than how many episodes they thought they'd have to work with. It's not as if the episode count was sprung on them unexpectedly at the last minute.

(and ftr I actually do like LoK overall)

The word 'tighter' gets thrown around a lot, and whenever I see it, it's usually followed by these complaints: Not enough Bolin! Not enough Asami! Eww Mako! Eww probending! Which IMHO, I think are subjective.

You may not like probending, but to say it 'ruined the flow' is purely opinion, not fact. Probending was a big part of the show, and part of Amon's point. Boin and Asami were there, and people complain about them not getting enough 'character deveopment', well...the story wasn't about their growth. It was about Korra's. And yes, despite what the korra fans with the 'hurt feelings' think, Korra did grow. I think they mostly reject it because Mako was a part of it in the finale. Which...yeah, again purely opinion. So it wasn't 'incertain your favorite character here' that joined Korra. That doesn't negate it happened. :P

I think a big problem is that people use their, sometimes way too extreme, hatred for certain things as an excuse for why the show 'lolwasbadsrsly'
