Am I the only one that is fascinated by reading old internet arguments?

I bring this up because of the secret a few days ago about the Ms.Scribe story, and since then I've been reading through the old wanks on Fandom Wank Wiki's famous wanks page. I feel like this is really unhealthy, but I can't stop, it's so interesting! D:

Two or three days and I'm still hung up on the MsScribe story. I started going through fandomlore and other peoples' reactions just to capture what that time on the internet was like. I still feel like I can't really conceive of the hugeness that was Cassie Clare's BNF-dom.

Extend that to old drama in general and you have my fascination with this utterly insane series of threads on MTS long before I ever joined. Long story short, girl invents the most ridiculously miserable personal life ever, puppets about seven different accounts in order to keep up the illusion that people actually believe her once it starts getting really out-there, comes up with about three different justifications for it when caught...it's a train wreck.

Finding Old movies

I found it!

It's "Sinbad: The Battle of the Dark Knights" (1998)

The character I was thinking about was called "Bophisto", not Calypso or Calypto. Whoops! :V

I actually found it because I was talking with my mom and the movie came up and apparently she had watched it too! She helped me find the name of one of the actors and from there we found it.

There isn't that much information on it, but I'm fairly sure this was it.

If I may, there is another movie I had been trying to find that has been similarly difficult to find.

Actually, I was talking about this movie with my mom just before the Arabian fantasy movie came up in our conversation.

She's been watching the opening ceremony of the London Olympic games and it jogged her memory, so she was able to give me more accurate information than before:



This is a film that aired on the TV on seventies, dubbed, so she never caught the original title and the dubbed title simply never stuck with her.

She says it might have been American, but isn't sure.

In it, a boy in his twenties who is a wizard has to fight an evil wizard who killed his parents when he was little. This boy has a scar in the shape of a lightning bolt in his forehead.

There is no magical school, and apparently the whole movie was about the conflict between him and the evil wizard.

My mom has no idea how the film ended, because it was terribly dull and boring and she couldn't stand watching it for long.

When the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone film came out, my mom was surprised at seeing some of the concepts rehashed, and commented to me the similarities between that and the movie she watched.

If anybody has any help, that would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

Korra fandom musings

So tumblr is now aflame with wank over a few statements Bryke made. [Basically: Oh, we'll piss off someone no matter what we do. We write the show we want to.] Seems pretty bland, right? Well these simple statements have unleashed the korrapocolypse on tumblr. I found one very amusing post by one fangirl who said "How dare they ignore our essays and our "reasonable arguments" and hurt our feelings!" and then in their next breath went on to rant about Bryke and how any person who likes Korra just wants to suck Mako's dick. Reasonable, yeah.

I'm no Bryke fan, I feel they aren't perfect, but the level of insanity and straight ungrateful behavior has just hit a peak for me. I get the feeling most of these people had already made their headcanons, and felt betrayed when the show wasn't everything they wanted it to be. A lot of these essays I've seen are full of subjective views and over exaggerated points, too.

Oh Avatar fandom, don't stop being crazy.

Boondock Saints - Rocco

Watching this again with a friend and I mentioned that a pretty much knew Rocco would die the moment he accidentally killed the cat and that while I had a inkling from everything in the strip club but that the cat sealed it for me. He stared at me like I was crazy and starting going on about how Rocco's death was a COMPLETELY SURPRISE and how could you see it coming and he still can't believe they killed off such an awesome character.

I sort of boggled at him because really the only thing that surprised me was that it wasn't one of the Saints that killed Rocco in the end.

Was this a case of me reading too much into the movie (and giving Duffy too much credit) or is my friend right?

Tutorials for beginner artists

I used to draw a lot when I was younger. Because of various reasons I dropped it in high school. I did a quick sketch a few days ago and realized I 1. still love to draw and 2. really need to learn the basics.

My problem is that most of the tutorials I found seem to either be aimed at artists who already knows what they're doing ("Do a circle. Do a line. Do another circle. Now draw Superman!") or be all about certain styles (mostly anime and superhero comics).

Does anyone know where I can find good beginner tutorials?

Can you tell me how to write "I will always love you"? I don't trust Google Translate, especially with such a difficult language.

Before you ask: this is not a Hetalia thing. It's for a story I'm writing where one of the main characters has the gift of tongues, and a few lines are in what I consider to be interesting languages just for the fuck of it. I can work out the basic mechanics of many languages...but this one is hard.

I'm basically combing around to see if I can get the same answer a few times before I use it.

I only heard about it after the person in question apologized to her, but it sort of soured me on reading her tumblr. It's one thing to fangirl stuff, but you must realize that if it's real people...you might be taking it too far. Especially when you take little pieces of things and point "There, totally into each other!" (Apparently one of the people caught wind of this pairing, and started being more flirty with Alice...I wonder why.)

I'm getting so fucking tired of Chick-Fil-A supporters' whining about their so-called "persecution" and bitching about the First Amendment. FREE SPEECH GOES BOTH WAYS. No one is trying to say Chick-Fil-A can't have their opinion; they're free to think and say whatever they want. But people that disagree are free to react accordingly. I'm sick of hearing about how boycotting them is "OMG SO MEAN YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!!!!!!" Yet, those same people have no issues boycotting JC Penney or Starbucks or Oreo.

X-Men Comics recs? (Part II)

(I posted this comment yesterday and got some great recs, but I wanted to see if anyone had any more suggestions!)

So I've been a long-time casual reader of The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Daredevil, and some other Marvel comics, but my only exposure to the X-Men for the longest time was when various members were on the Avengers line-up, or when they crossed over with something else (idk, they always felt a bit different and separate from the the rest of the MU I guess).

However, I recently got curious, read the Dark Phoenix Saga, and loved it. And now I really want recs. So, anyone got them for me? I like big events, and have absolutely no compunction about wading into huge messes of continuity — I love trying to figure out confusing continuity and having loads of wtf-ery that I don't understand happening in my comics actually makes me feel like I'm reading part of a bigger, epic story and I love that.

Also, don't bother reccing anything written in the past 6-7 years. The Marvel Universe has been dead to me since they decided that heroes being heroic was boring, and everyone needs to be horrible to each other instead.

Beta for Fanfiction

Where do you go to find a beta for fanfiction? I have a friend in RL who is willing to read my writing, but she's not even involved in fandom and, you know, she's my friend & she's probably not going to be honest all of the time. It would be really nice to find one on the net.

I would sign up for one on ff.net, but there are so many, and most of them seem most interested in finding grammatical errors. My grammar isn't the best when I'm writing on f!S, but in general writing my SPAG is very good. It would just be really nice to find one who's interested in discussing stylistic changes, word usage, and other big picture things.

And since this is a thread already, tell me fandom secrets: do you have betas for your fic? Why or why not?

How many secrets have YOU submitted

I'm curious to know how many members do multiple secrets, and how often you submit one. Some secrets are painfully obvious that they're by the same person, but it's the thought of having two totally different secrets and two sets of totally different reactions that really trips my curiosity. I've been a member for about 6 months, and have submitted about 10 secrets. What about you guys?
