Question! How difficult do you think it would be to learn ASL from scratch by yourself?

Hm... Well you can try working through the information on this site: http://www.lifeprint.com/ - It's an ASL professor's lesson plans from his own classes basically. You can probably get a pretty good understanding of the basics at least. Though I think it's nicer to work with someone on it in person who can help you with making sure you're signing things correctly. Also you need to make sure you're using the right sign "dialect" for the area you're living in.

That is useful, thank you!

I'm looking into this properly now, and apparently the official sign language where I live is "mutually unintelligible" with ASL. So I liked up if there is an international language and apparently there's more than one.

Mexico. I wanted to learn it out of curiosity and out of wanting to learn something new that might be useful someday.

There is apparently a Mexican Sign Language

And probably many scattered other ones all over the country, too.

I don't know anyone who I could use it to communicate with, to be honest. (And also add shyness and a little dash of social anxiety and introverted personality and :V)

Cool :) I would suggest maybe seeing if there are classes offered at a university perhaps? Or sometimes here classes are offered in community centers where anyone can join - maybe there's something similar in Mexico.

One of the links at the bottom of the wikipedia page is for the Summer Institute of Linguistics - I'm poking around on that site to see what they have to say.

I just noticed that the links on the Lifeprint page I linked to in the last comment are out of date... first one works but the order pages are broken (but there's some contact info so maybe useful?) and the second link doesn't work at all. Should have checked that before I linked.
