Just spoken languages? I know ASL as well as English. Not fluent in ASL yet but I'm working on it!

Well, I guess we can turn it into a thread about what languages you speak/understand/are learning. I'm just curious about all the people, myself included, that have been able to reach out and contact a great community online through a language that's originally foreign. Also, I'm interested in the thoughts of native speakers and what it represents for them to have so many people using their mother tongue as a tool to widen their reach.

Ah! I see you had a different idea in mind than what I was thinking when I replied. That's cool. :)

But now I'm intrigued! What motivated you to learn ASL? I'm just really curious about why and how people decide they want to reach outside their small circle of family/acquaintances/culture/etc.

I'm hard of hearing and even though I was "raised hearing" as they say I wanted to learn ASL as well so I could communicate with some deaf friends at college and then I found that in some classes is started to get easier to follow the interpreters rather than struggle to listen to the professors - especially in the bigger class rooms.

Now that I'm out of college I've joined deaf and hard of hearing groups in the area to join to keep my ASL skills up.

Question! How difficult do you think it would be to learn ASL from scratch by yourself?

Hm... Well you can try working through the information on this site: http://www.lifeprint.com/ - It's an ASL professor's lesson plans from his own classes basically. You can probably get a pretty good understanding of the basics at least. Though I think it's nicer to work with someone on it in person who can help you with making sure you're signing things correctly. Also you need to make sure you're using the right sign "dialect" for the area you're living in.

I'm looking into this properly now, and apparently the official sign language where I live is "mutually unintelligible" with ASL. So I liked up if there is an international language and apparently there's more than one.

I don't know, it just might be someone that's used to people taking over discussions that are meant to be about other cultures and countries and making it about how awesome they are that they speak another language. I've seen it happen so I can understand anon being twitchy. Though they should have been nicer about it or you know read the whole thread.

yeah, i know ASL too -- i went to a deaf school after all. :)

Cool. :) And since I seem to have set off an anon above... I feel like I should point out I'm hard of hearing and wanting to learn because of that reason - not just for "bragging" or whatever.
