I just got curious and thought it'd be nice to know what f!s users speak in their daily lives. My mother tongue is Spanish. What about you guys?

(Regarding yesterday's secrets about the use of "feels", I think someone commented on how it feels less wrong to play with a language that isn't yours, and after sleeping on it I realized that I have a knee-jerk reaction to people playing with Spanish like people do with "feelings" ---> "feels". Yikes, hypocrisy! D:)

I don't think many people will even know of this language, but Hmong. My parents are first generation in the USA (I was born and raised in the USA). I feel terrible, though, because when I was a young child I spoke mostly Hmong, but as I grew older I became much more fluent in English. These days, I stutter through my native language and feel like a failure that I can't speak it very well.

English and Russian, although my Russian is much poorer than the Russian of other first-generation Americans, because both my mother and grandmother are fluent in English (they were trained to be translators, or more commonly, ESL teachers), and my father studied pretty hard at English before immigrating so he'd have a shot at working here. My folks speak Russian to each other and I kind of understand it and recently have been trying to polish it up a little.

It doesn't help that I'm the second child in the family -- by the time I started to talk my older sister was already bringing home English from school. To this day (we're 27 and 23) she understand 95% of Russian as compared to my 80%. But that's pretty common with first generation kids born in the US, the older ones speak the native language better than the younger in most cases.

My parents are fluent in Marathi and Hindi, but for me it's good old Angrezi :)

Ooh! I normally speak English but when my 18-year-maid comes a-calling, I switch to my mother's tongue of Malay. this has been happening for so long that I rarely speak my mother's tongue outside my house.

Native is English, but as I live in Japan I use English and Japanese about half-and-half in my daily life.

Yay, lots of Spanish speakers here (me too!) Lurking in fandom has help me get a lot better at my English, which is always a plus. How many of you read fics in English or engage in English fandoms? How many write in English? And more importantly, how come we can't participate on the same way in Spanish fandom? I think this is remarkable, because in my opinion, we behave way differently in one and in the other.

I speak Indonesian and English! Although I can read and talk a little on Chinese and Japanese.

Though seriously, I speak the mangled Spanish (of the latin-american guate variety). My tatas didn't raise me right and failed to correct all the wrongness during my developmental years.
