Long-haul truck driver here! I go all over the place, see a lot of sights, meet people from all over, learn weird arcane factoids about various places, and get paid to do something I love! And I occasionally pass by some of my internet friends and get to meet up with them. Best job ever. \o/

wow, that sounds kind of awesome, and not really like how truck drivers are portrayed in the media. Do you mind if I ask how you got into it? Do you own your own truck or do you drive someone elses?

Haha, I'm definitely not your typical trucker! XD

I got into it by, basically, playing to my strengths. When I learned how to drive manual transmission, I discovered that I really enjoyed it, and driving is fun for me. I'm also a really solitary person who doesn't mind spending weeks away from the family and living in small spaces. So when I hit upon trucking as a possibility, I knew I had to at least give it a try. It's worked out fantastic so far!

I'm a company driver, they own the truck and I'm just assigned to it. I don't have the money or financial savvy to own my own truck, really. XD I'm assigned a dedicated dispatcher too, he handles about 100 other drivers and coordinates our loads and stuff.

Seconding [personal profile] littlestbirds. I figure all you really need to do it is get class 1 (or whatever appropriate) license, and not get lost traveling from city to city to not-so city.

In the US, you need a Class A CDL and a clean driving record, and then you can get hired by tons of different companies, sight unseen! Easiest job application process ever, I didn't have to do an interview or anything, which was great for me. XD There's something like 250,000 (!!) job openings for truckers right now, so the big carriers especially will snap up anyone who gives it a go.

The actual job is a little more complicated than not getting lost, but getting there on time without hitting anything and being able to put the trailer where they tell you is the basic description, yes. XD

Ah, thanks for the infos! o/

Yeah, whenever I look throw classifieds for ads, there's ALWAYS tons of positions for drivers for so many companies. Most require for manual labour on top of it (loading/unloading goods) afaik, but I think I've kind of let myself fantasize about it being the perfect solo job with perfect hours (overnights or early mornings) haha.

No problem, I love babbling about my job. c:

Hey, you might be good at it! City driving is a pain in the butt to me, more so than having to load/unload the trailer (I would definitely cart stuff around on a dolly if it meant I could magically skip city driving, haha), but in a short day cab, at night, on a regular route, it could be nice! Especially if you like going solo. I love my alone time.

That constantly traveling around the country and being on the road is something that I always thought would be really neat about that job; especially if you get a chance with your schedule to stop in and see people that you know all around the country.

I was curious -- as a company driver, is gas something that you put on a company card or account that they give you upfront, or do you somehow pay while you travel and get reimbursed, or how does that work? I can't imagine how much it must cost to fill up a tank on one of the big trucks, especially if the load you're toting is super heavy.
