Most Interesting Job You've Had?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-27 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering about jobs lately. Mine was as a bartender. I got to meet tons of people like that (and heard a lot of life stories).

I'm a property manager for a family partnership. The buildings date from the 1870s and are candidates for the national register of historic places; I will probably be coordinating some restoration efforts on them soon. I enjoy researching their history and how it intertwines with the history of the town.

That sounds like an amazing job, no lie. Did you get into it through an architecture background, or a history background, or something else/by accident? Just curious, as that sounds like a really interesting way to make a living.

I was a Doll Hair Stylist at the American Girl Store at the Mall of America. Basically at the store they had a counter/section where you can take your doll in and we style its hair.

That's amazing! I love American Girl; I have two of my own from when I was a little girl that are packed away in storage somewhere. . .

You sound like you brought so much joy to people! Kudos!

Tax prep, hands down. As well as financial arcana, I've learned ridiculous amounts about American people and culture from doing it.

I was a photo mod at Photobucket. Majority of our work was to filter out the porn people would upload. After work, every time I blinked, I'd see images of porn. Not as fun as it sounds.

I worked in a hospital for a month, it was amazing (and sometimes really sad) but I'm looking forward to going back there for the long run in fall :)

I used to work in a hospital morgue. That was pretty cool. Preparing bodies for family viewings and releasing them to funeral homes. Got to see some autopsies too!

Long-haul truck driver here! I go all over the place, see a lot of sights, meet people from all over, learn weird arcane factoids about various places, and get paid to do something I love! And I occasionally pass by some of my internet friends and get to meet up with them. Best job ever. \o/

wow, that sounds kind of awesome, and not really like how truck drivers are portrayed in the media. Do you mind if I ask how you got into it? Do you own your own truck or do you drive someone elses?

Seconding [personal profile] littlestbirds. I figure all you really need to do it is get class 1 (or whatever appropriate) license, and not get lost traveling from city to city to not-so city.

Working with adults with developmental disabilities. I still do it but now I'm on the graveyard shift so it isn't as interesting.

I worked at Walt Disney World Resorts for a month before my various illnesses caught up with me and I had to quit. I was overworked and underpaid, but I don't regret the time I spent there at all. I worked Recreation, which meant that one day I'd be renting out boats at the Yacht & Beach Club, another doing various shifts of cleanup duties, children's activities, ferrying guests around on a stretch golf cart, renting out sports equipment and DVDs, handing out towels at the pools, that sort of thing. Kept me busy, but my coworkers were awesome, my managers were awesome, even the guests were awesome. Were I to miraculously regain my health, I would move back down to Orlando in a heartbeat just so I could work there again. Only this time I'd try not to have five roommates who don't know what personal space is, for fuck's sake...

I used to type resumes for a national outplacement firm. I'd get resume assignments from all over the USA, but my favorites usually came from New York or California because they would be people involved in the entertainment industry. My favorite line ever: "Ability to work well with all types of individuals and in various environments, including Howard Stern."

I've also done play therapy with abused children, so I got to spend 45-minute counseling sessions with 4-year-olds and a bunch of toys.

English teacher in one of the best high schools in Seoul, Korea.

Or, alternately, being a dairy farmer.

Photo lab. Developing film with that swanky machine, pretending I was handling some crazy isotope whenever I had to stick my hands in a black box, mixing chemicals in these cylindrical metal tubs I was only a head taller than, and printing out some amateur porn within an hour was pretty swell.

My current job is probably my most interesting: I'm a cataloger at a TV museum (the Paley Center for Media--ya know, like PaleyFest?) and I basically watch seminars/TV shows/movies and record all the info in our database, like the cast/crew, airdate, production details and a synopsis and stuff. As a result, I have seen at least one episode of Every Show Actually Ever. It can be quite good fun sometimes. Today I watched "ReBoot"--anyone remember that? Weird-ass CGI show from the '90s?

My first job was working at a Pokémon kiosk at the mall when I was 15. This was at its peak, so it was pretty intense (and awesome).

I'm currently working as a wardrobe assistant/dresser at a small theater company. Lots of backstage drama, and many extremely strange ways to damage clothes.

Working as a tour guide at a waste-to-energy incineraton plant (no clue if this is the right English term, but my online dictionary assures me it exists. Alternatively, it gives me waste-fuelled power plant).

It was interesting in and of itself, but the looks I got (or get) when I told others where I worked were priceless.
