Does anyone here speak Íslenska?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yo. Does anybody floating around here speak Icelandic?
Can you tell me how to write "I will always love you"? I don't trust Google Translate, especially with such a difficult language.

Before you ask: this is not a Hetalia thing. It's for a story I'm writing where one of the main characters has the gift of tongues, and a few lines are in what I consider to be interesting languages just for the fuck of it. I can work out the basic mechanics of many languages...but this one is hard.

I'm basically combing around to see if I can get the same answer a few times before I use it.

Is it important for your story for you to actually write in the languages?

I think it'd be easier on you (and on the readers, too!) if you just wrote it on English and just said on the narration what language it was or mentioned that it was another language or something.

I fully endorse this piece of advice. It makes the author look smug, like they're saying 'oh look how many languages I can speak'. If the actual way the language sounds isn't important to your story (for a misunderstanding, or something like that), you should stick to the language the narration is written in.

Disagree. If it's part of the plot (OP said character had the gift of tongues) and they're just bits here and there I don't think it's the author being smug - it's just part of the story. I like it.

And honestly if you think it's the author looking smug I think that reflects more on your insecurities than the author.

Try this LJ community:

linguaphiles.livejournal.com/profile

(Even if it doesn't pan out, please don't use Google Translate :O)

There's a community called learnnordic that might be able to help you. My Icelandic's really bad, but I do know that 'I love only you' is 'Ég elska bara þig' because that song was on constant repeat where I worked. I'd translate your sentence as 'Ég mun alltaf elska þig', but that may not be entirely grammatical.
