I think my main problem with it that it was not important to the plot (or any subplot) and it was just thrown in to make it more "interesting". there was no reason to purposefully write her as lesbian only to have her fall for a man, except for the sake of a cheap gimmick..

Exactly. If she had been one in canon (yeah, yeah, I know; humor me) and Moffat wanted to play with that, that'd be one thing. But he specifically made her a lesbian, did nothing with that (she didn't have a girlfriend, and yeah, we see her with a female client, but that's her job and she refers to male clients a lot more) then had her fall in love with a man. It's just... pointless and stupid.
