Fandom seems to be this odd mix of both tolerance and intolerance.

For instance, while overall welcoming to gays and lesbians, I've seen bisexuals get a lot of flack. Asexuals, too.

Sexual liberation is accepted, but some people seem to forget that also includes choosing not to have sex. I've seen people converge on somebody who admitted to be celibate, concerned that they were oppressed because how could anybody *not* want sex?

Getting into non-social issues (like shipping in the like), fandom is rife with intolerance when it comes to differing opinions.

In fandom, the good is really good but the bad can be very ugly.

It's not that fandom is inherently more accepting or tolerant than real life (though that may depend on what it's a fandom for, exactly, and how tolerant that is). But thanks to the Internet, you can get a gauge of a person before ever interacting with them, and thus easily form a social circle of friendly and welcoming people.
