I agree actually. I feel I can be myself online and in fandom in a way I can't in person. And fandom does seem to be more accepting about a lot of things; of course that's not 100% true, but on a whole I think fandom is a lovely way to meet like-minded people and express oneself.

This.

Of course it has it's downside sometimes. Everything does. But I love, enjoy and appreciate fandom. ♥

I agree! I've come to terms with my sexuality and learned to love myself more than I ever did before, because of fandom.

I sometimes wonder if I would have ever gotten into fandom if it hadn't be for those silly "everyone in hogwarts is gay and it's totally normal!1!" fics on ff.net that blew my mind when I was an angsty queer teenager.

So I know exactly what you mean OP, even if "safe space" isn't exactly it

(Anonymous) 2012-07-27 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly think it's only because a lot of people in fandom think that they're special snowflakes coming out as gay or trans or whatnot.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ohoho, or they have fictive mind mates, or Mary Bell/one of the Columbine Killers living in their heads! Or... they're part wolf/octopus/what the hell ever, but if you happen to mention that you don't believe them "OMG, YOU ABLEIST CIS SCUM! CHECK YOUR FUCKING PRIVILEGE!"

Fucking this.

Most people who smell of "being trans" but actually are just following a trend tend to be yaoi fangirls. It's so they can be OMGSPECIAL!I'm a boy and I like yaoi!

It depends on which fandoms you're in. Some are awesome and accepting and all that, others are breeding grounds for homophobia, misogyny, and bigotry in general.

In any case, this secret is rather adorable!

"Coming home to a computer and fandom at night where fem/slash is a normal natural thing is like a breath of fresh air".

This. This so much.

For me it's not only about the stuff like femslash/slash but just the general atmosphere of "live and let live" and no one telling you you're too old to be a fan of TV shows or like certain books.

It's nice :)

Of course the internet can also be a total nightmare and ruin your day...

I agree too, I think most people in fandom are pretty accepting and welcoming of LGBT people. Especially the L and G end of the acronym.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
As full of wank and prejudice and rudeness as fandom sometimes is, it can definitely be a warm and welcoming space. I'm glad you find it safe, OP.

IA, fandom can be very liberating. I think one cause of this is simply the internet's way of self-sorting. I've come across some very straight corners of videogame fandom (eg. people who write fic on Gamefaqs), and I'm sure some people like hanging out in them, but this huge queer-friendly swathe of fandom has largely pushed them out into those isolated corners.

In general people on the internet don't talk to each other much until they already have a good deal of prior information about each other, either contextual or gained from reading things by/about someone before initiating contact, and that just inherently means there's fewer inhibitions involved in contact. <--my theory.

I feel the same way. I've had very good experiences in fandom.

IA, tbh. There are trolls and rude people and SJWs and whatever occasionally, but for the most part it really does seem like creative, cool, open-minded people. ♥ Fandom is awesome, crazypantsery and all.

Agreed. Fandom/the internet in general tends to be more open-minded in my experience, because we've sort of "seen it all" - the good, the bad, and the ugly - and it's kind of a giant shared experience thing. Even though there's wank and whatnot, it's much easier to find people with similar interests and priorities and values, because you can reach a broader range of people than those who just happened to grow up in the same place as you. And it's way easier to avoid people who try to start shit with you online than it is to do so IRL.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I've found the exact opposite to be true. I catch a whole lot less flack for my sexuality IRL, than I do in fandom circles online.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
And all it had to do to get there was treat any person who says they believe in God like a subhuman. Hooray?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Tolerance, it works both ways.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh bullshit. Fandom isn't even a particularly atheist-friendly space, let alone actively anti-religion.

It's the people who say they believe in God and therefore find it necessary to treat other people like crap that catch flak for their beliefs. That ain't exactly religious persecution.

Really? I personally feel a lot more judged online than I ever have in real life. Then again, maybe it's different in Canada, but I've never been bullied up here (at least not in school by my peers). I've been bullied a lot online, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom seems to be this odd mix of both tolerance and intolerance.

For instance, while overall welcoming to gays and lesbians, I've seen bisexuals get a lot of flack. Asexuals, too.

Sexual liberation is accepted, but some people seem to forget that also includes choosing not to have sex. I've seen people converge on somebody who admitted to be celibate, concerned that they were oppressed because how could anybody *not* want sex?

Getting into non-social issues (like shipping in the like), fandom is rife with intolerance when it comes to differing opinions.

In fandom, the good is really good but the bad can be very ugly.

This. I'm completely in the closet IRL and I seriously think that I would kill myself if anyone (particularly my parents) ever found out, but I never felt like I had anything to hide in fandom.
