This isn't a book or a movie, but I would recommend the series Quantum Leap. The Sam/Al subtext is so glorious. Now, the show goes out of its way to make Al a horndog always talking about all his ex-wives, but my headcanon has always been that's how he copes with Sam being away.

(If you need a synopsis: Scientist is trying to figure out time travel, and ends up "leaping" into the bodies of people to "put right what once went wrong, in the hopes that one day, his next leap will be the leap home" and he has help via hologram from his best friend that only he can see and hear way in the future of 1998.)

I've actually wanted to watch Quantum Leap for a really long time, but it never aired in my country so I just never got around to it. It sounds like the kind of series I'd love, and after hearing you tell me it's that subtexty... I'll get right on it! Thanks :D
