F!S Anon Meme (the Seventh, and now on DW!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff.

Unpopular Ships
Obligatory Masturbation Thread
Fandoms you wish existed
How old are you?
What series have you always meant to watch/read/play/etc. but have never?
Time and location
Female-centric works
How do you feel about Tumblr?

First fandom?

Can anyone recommend some slashy books/movies for me? I don't care if it's an old classic or something newer, as long as it has good subtext! Thanks in advance~

Not everyone will agree with me but "Dead Poets Society."
Neil/Todd forever.

As for books...
"A Separate Peace."

I probably have my goggles on way to tight though.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I love A Separate Peace! Definitely don't think you have your goggles on too tight with that one, seriously.

Dead Poets Society I've also seen, but it was a long time ago and I don't remember it so well. But I'll give it another try now, so thanks!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember discussing the homoerotic subtext of A Separate Peace in high school English, so no, it's not just you.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You definitely don't have your goggles on too tight. Wikipedia even comments on it, iirc.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You would have to be in some pretty deep denial not to see the subtext in "A Separate Peace."

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Dead Poets Society." Neil/Todd forever.

HELL YES. Those two so had a thing, I don't care what anyone says.

My first slash ship. I was twelve and I was still gleefully babbling about it with my sister as the sun came up after we watched it hours before.

Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner (and sequels).

Drawing Blood by Poppy Z, Brite and also her books about New Orleans chefs, Ricky and G-man.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Both Swordspoint and Drawing Blood have been on my to-buy-list for ages, so with your rec I'll hopefully get off my ass and finally order them! I hadn't heard about those chefs before, so I'll google them right away~

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
i'd second the ellen kushner books as nicely slashy, especially "the privilege of the sword" (which is a sequel to "swordspoint", although i read it first.) i also might be biased -- because femmeslash! -- but i thought it was actually a bit better than the first book. the library here doesn't have any of her other books, so i'm waiting to get back to school and find the rest of the riverside books.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding Drawing Blood, I LOVE that book (and the tiny sequel that is in one of her anthologies).

Anthing by Poppy Z. Brite anyway.

Fight Club

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, really? I've avoided that movie because I really don't like movies with that type of ending twist, but perhaps I should give it a fighting chance (pun intended, sorry).

"the god eaters" by jesse hajicek is a really great adventure story, with gay protagonists. basically, there's not any subtext at all...but it's really excellent! there's a fan trailer here (http://riverside-hq.livejournal.com/367037.html), and you can read the whole book here: http://chartreuse.studiowhippingboy.com/g_e_index.html

This isn't a book or a movie, but I would recommend the series Quantum Leap. The Sam/Al subtext is so glorious. Now, the show goes out of its way to make Al a horndog always talking about all his ex-wives, but my headcanon has always been that's how he copes with Sam being away.

(If you need a synopsis: Scientist is trying to figure out time travel, and ends up "leaping" into the bodies of people to "put right what once went wrong, in the hopes that one day, his next leap will be the leap home" and he has help via hologram from his best friend that only he can see and hear way in the future of 1998.)

The Administration Series by Manna Francis.
There are 7 books if I remember well. First one is here:

Sleuth! I like the remake better (2007), but the original (1972) isn't bad.

i'm a dude and i don't read slash or any of that on purpouse but there's a book called "lovecraft unbound" -- it's a collection of short stories in tribute to lovecraft (obviously) and cosmic horror; there's one that's got a quite a bit of gay subtext to it. i don't remember the title though but i did enjoy the story, it's one of the better ones in that book

Brideshead Revisited is a wonderful classic book with a male-male love story (subtextual only because it's not clear whether they're actually having sex). The TV miniseries from the 1980's (with young Jeremy Irons!) is just as good and even slashier. I personally don't like the more recent film, which turns the love story into "sad gay man unrequitedly in love with straight friend," but I know it's been a good gateway for new fans who like slash.

Not subtextual, but simply a gay love story and very very awesome: My Beautiful Laundrette (with young Daniel Day-Lewis!). So, yeah, here's the rec post for 1980s films with great British actors in slashy roles. ;)

The Great Gatsby.

Also, how do you feel about actual text? The first thing that came to mind was The Talented Mr. Ripley, but then I realized the slash in there was canon.

Dashiell Hammett - The Glass Key - There's a scene that still doesn't make any sense for me without slash googles.
