[ Anon Meme ]

F!S Anon Meme (the Seventh, and now on DW!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff.

Voyager. And also Deep Space Nine. I love those. In fact, they are both next on my list to re-watched. And I don't think Voyager was as flawed as people claim. Janeway was awesome. An B'Lanna. And Tuvok. And the Doctor. I loved both Kes and Seven. And while Neelix was never my favorite, I never found him as annoying as everyone seems to.

Not anon mostly because I hate not being able to track threads here on DW.

Sometimes I get nostalgic and try to defend Voyager to myself... and then I remember that Chakotay exists.

So there's... that.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what is wrong with Chakotay?

He's one of the worst examples of a stereotypical Native American that I've ever seen. I mean, the majority of his plot involvement involves vision questions or spirit animals or at the very least some piece of wisdom passed down from his ancestors...

I think Voyager would have been vastly improved if someone else had been the captain of the Maquis ship. B'Elanna maybe.

...yeah, two kickass female captains would definitely have been awesome.

I think you meant vision QUESTS, and as for spirit animals and wisdom from the elders, I think, CONSIDERING the fact that, yes, the Maquis were basically "Aboriginals --- IIIIINNNN SPAAAAAAAAACE" it was handled a whole lot better than it COULD have been. As in, those things are, like it or lump it, are actually a standard part of Generic North American "Native/First Nations Traditions."

I'm not saying that's a GOOD thing; I'm just saying, that stereotypes of the old religion are, unfortunately, all we've got left, instead of knowing how the old religion got our ancestors through their day-to-day lives. Because the Catholics and Protestants decided to not only conquer our lands they forced their Egyptian idol-god on us. Which isn't even actually Christian (but don't get me started on that), and now NO ONE knows for 100% certain, what the individual religions of each tribe (some of which have been extirpated) actually were.

So we end up with the "All Aboriginals are Anishinaabe" trope of vision quest, spirit animal, and wisdom of the grandfathers. The last of which is usually gleaned from trying to deconstruct the oral legends recorded by guys like Silas Rand, who "Christan-ified" the old wisdom when it said something that didn't appeal to the Protestant priest's repressed sensibilities.

TL;DR: I'd hate to see what the SJWs make of North of 60. Or even 8th Fire. Something tells me these whiny white privileged codependent brats (there's a reason why those are the only people they attack) have missed the mark so badly, they would probably call Wab Kinew (host of 8th Fire) an apple. But THAT'S not RACISM ohhhhhhh noooooo and "[insert emotionally immature profanity here] you if you say that it is" etc. etc.

same anon

Also! Your assertion that all of Chakotay's plots revolve around Bog Standard Generic Aboriginal religion are 100% false...as you would know, if you'd even watched a single episode of Voyager. Which I strongly doubt you have. So buh-bye little SJW, and thank you for playing, better luck next time.

IIRC the main fandom joke about Chakotay was that his piloting doomed shuttles. So yeah.
