Dude they were pretty much dating throughout season 3. That whale episode? Could have been titled John and Rodney Go On A Date.

I have to say I'm not too familiar outside of the John/Rodney show or Team!Sheppard fic, but omg the fandom produced some amazing stuff. I'm a little jealous thinking of the treasure that awaits you. Admittedly though a lot of it focuses on Sheppard and/or McKay.
