Some ground rules:

I can't read fic with English characters in. I'm English myself and dear God, some people abuse our colloquialisms so badly.

Not every other word is bloody. We can fuck too, not just shag. Occasionally we call it an ass, not an arse.

Yeah, in fiction, we speak in colloquialisms because otherwise people can't recognise englishness..? i guess...? And don't you know that the only hot drink we drink is tea? no thanks to that coffee and hot chocolate.

i will, however, look down on any fellow brit who says 'sneakers' 'sidewalk' or 'soda' etc. it's ridiculous. there are some words that will never catch on (i hope).

I'm British and I sometimes use 'sidewalk' in non-British fandoms because Americans use 'pavement' to mean tarmac so 'sidewalk' is much more clear. I use soda sometimes too, because it just sounds better to me than any of the alternatives. As I don't drink it myself I don't use it very often though.

'Sneakers' can die, though.

Not on the US central-east coast, it hasn't. What are other Americans calling them now? Tennis shoes?

Yeah I usually hear tennis shoes, though I have heard trainers quite a bit in Los Angeles.

Okay, I know all about pop vs. soda vs. coke vs. cold-drink in the US - what's the preferred term over there?

Fizzy Drink (or just Fizzy), unless you have something more specific in mind (lemonade or whatever). Might be regional.

Well, I agree. But it's also really hard being non-brit in a fandom set in England. I've seen many a rant by Brits about how they can't stand when people write their fanfictions with American slang, and just simply won't read it. And then you are expected to get a "Brit-pick" but that not exactly easy to find if you aren't a known writer. So we try... maybe go a bit overboard but what else are we supposed to do? It's a catch 22, I suppose.

I try to avoid this by having my friend in England look over any work I write with a Brittish character in it, but sorry if my stuff has ever been the offending party, OP.
