Some ground rules:

They have been friends, or will be friends, for more than thirty years (and then on until they die, in my fics), despite separation, other loves, death (sort of) and the unnutterable strangeness and emotional illiteracy of one of them.

*He* is: clever, cold, arrogant, ascetic, untidy but also fascinating, mercurial, kind, a fierce lover of justice and of music.

He is: hot tempered, handy with a pistol, endlessly patient until he has had enough when he whips out a spine and stands up to *him*, curious, self-effacing and jolly handsome.

For them to be together and it be known, would mean social death and a hefty prison term each. But they take the risk.

Top hats, frock coats, thick fogs, and hansom cabs are involved.

And Guy Ritchie can keep his grubby, ruinous paws off them, just in case anyone thought of a certain film series (shudder).
