Some ground rules:

They're always there for each other, and they understand each other better than anyone else. They've been through some rough times, but they can still share a laugh over something stupid. When it comes down to it, the rest of the world could burn away, but they'd be alright if they had each other.

They get each other perfectly. One of the characters is very strange and has always had trouble making friends, and even his family finds him difficult to understand. The (male) character I ship him with doesn't always understand him perfectly either, but he gets him a lot better than anyone else. Unlike other people who brush the character off because he's difficult, he takes the time to understand him, because he sees things in the other character that he loves.

For the second character I mentioned, he was always hiding behind a cool image before he met the character I ship him with. Now he feels comfortable being himself, and though in some ways their relationship makes him more childish, it also helps him mature and be more understanding of himself and others.

They are completely honest and comfortable with each other, and they make each other so happy. Their relationship might be a little too codependent, but I love how much they need each other.

(Ah, sorry for rambling so much! Also, it was really difficult to make this clear without just using names, but interesting.)

Coworkers to friends to lovers. I like the slow build, and the fact that (in fic) awkward romance comes from being there for one another all the time.

I think they bring out the best in each other because they're both very flawed people in ways that clash, so they will have to work to improve if they want to make their relationship work. They understand each other in ways that few others in their lives can because they've gone through something that the others haven't. And they're hot together.

The fact that they're enemies and should hate each other, but in fact they keep each other going. In one of my favorite episodes character A is about to commit suicide, when he is told that B is about to be murdered. Now, if B were to die, that would fix a lot of A's problems. But instead he steps off the ledge, and risks everything to save B. B, in turn, has pretty much dedicated his entire life to catching A -- yet his reasons for doing so are pretty damn ambiguous, and he ends up actually helping A more often than not.

They are really different, to the point where there's tons of power gaps between them - a huge age gap, a social standing gap, and a bunch of canon-specific power issues too. It's so very fucked up...and they're a really WAFFy, romantic canon pairing.

I am just so fascinated by how they get it to work so damn well. Most of my fics recently have been about the younger, weaker one topping the everloving shit out of the supposedly powerful one.

They have pretty much the perfect relationship. They're 100% equals, they have each others' backs, they're completely honest with each other, accept each other for exactly who they are, and just love each other unconditionally. There are things about them that only the other knows, and they get each other in ways that no one else does. They fight and have their share of problems, but they always manage to work things out. They have the healthiest, most functional relationship I've ever seen in any fandom, and my ideal relationship is almost just like theirs.

That's the only one I can really explain. The others are all some degree of angsty and fucked up and unhealthy and I really have no explanation other than their dynamic is interesting and they have a ton of chemistry.

Both of them have strong ethics, are intelligent misfits in their families and can keep their cool in strange emergencies (which is, not surprisingly, how they first met). I'm also in love with the minimum seven year age difference (although that's an conservative estimate given that the younger one's age has never been revealed; he's legal, though).

They fucking made each other and destroyed each other. Their love for each other elevated them and then their bitterness ate at them for years and years.

They're an incredibly, confused mess of love, passion, shared ideology and then the other side of the coin: hatred, anger, bitterness, disgrace, humiliation. They're a meeting of two minds, best friends, a married couple, an emotionally abusive relationship, meant for each other, destined and doomed to be together.

They make me squee and capslock like a 13 year old. And they have one of the healthiest, sweetest, interesting relationships on the show. But mostly the first one--I get a lot of joy from it.

They keep betraying each other but it's always for the same reason: to protect their families. So they can't help but trust each other because they see themselves in each other. They come together as equals. He's the only one who will really listen to her and treat her like she's an actual person. He respects her and her choices even if her choices hurt him. She reminds him of how beautiful humanity can be and he admires her determination and compassion.

The fact that they are so different and did not like each other at first. Then after some time grew to respect and admire each other.

then there is the age difference, the hight difference, the way they worry about each other, and the amazing chemistry.

Because they're so alike! Even though he's a mobster and drug dealer, and she's a cop, they're both ambitious backstabbers who'll do anything they can to get ahead. I see them as giving each other benefits--she keeps him out of trouble, he tips her off to what his rivals are doing.

They're both completely different from each other. There's a vast height difference and an age difference. But world-ending events have forced them to work together and even though they don't seem to get along at first, they eventually learn to trust each other and help each other out.

One of the actors who plays one of the characters ships it?

Y CHOSE X.

In 160+ YEARS, EVERYONE ELSE HAS ALWAYS CHOSEN X'S BROTHER OVER X - EVEN X'S OWN FATHER - BUT Y CHOSE X DESPITE EVERYTHING THAT X HAS DONE TO HIM. BECAUSE Y DIED IN X'S ARMS, WHILE X WAS CRYING OVER HIM, DESPITE Y BECOMING A VICIOUS MONSTER WHO HATED EVERYTHING X WAS BY THE END. BECAUSE AS HE WAS DYING, HE SOUNDED FRIGHTENED AND REACHED FOR HIS FRIEND, DESPITE THEM NEVER BEING TACTILE AND HUGGY.

God, I've depressed myself again.

Y has every reason to hate X. Y slept with, then turned X's wife into a monster. X has killed him a couple of times (magic macguffin ensures Y can't die for good - til it started malfunctioning and he did, sort of). Y came to find X to kill him, to get his revenge and instead they ended up becoming friends. They realise they're not so different, not really. They're both still obsessed with the woman who broke their hearts. Both of them could probably use a friend. (Doesn't stop their first 'date' from ending with Y punching X in the face).

X doesn't get close to anyone. He's been around a long time and he's never had a friend. He's had all an consuming love, has used a lot of people to get what he wants, but never just had a friend, not til Y came along. He confides in Y (off screen, first mentioned during Y's death scene, which just made me cry even harder), he trusts him (which he only admits after 2.5 seasons), he actually keeps him out of dangerous situations to protect him despite the fact he could handle himself. I imagine X would be happy watching the world fall apart, so long as Y was still at his side. X still doesnt have anyone else, bar his brother and the woman they're both in love with, but even then he doesn't have the same kind of honest connection with them. Y does though. Y has a 'family' of sorts, he's loved by everyone in this little town, yet more often than not, he's still at X's side.

Their friendship is never really easy, half the time they don't even appear to like the other but they also fiercely love one another. Y is the only person who will tell X that he's being an idiot, yet back him up all the way if that's what he needs. They had a massive falling out in season three after X did something stupid (and viciously OOC), and they were pining, to the point other characters were pointing it out. X was uncharacteristically meek and apologetic towards Y thinking that would fix things, Y was acting like a dumped boyfriend. It was heartbreaking - didn't trust the writers to fix it tbh - but so cute. Then when they did become friends again, they went right back to being snarky and fun again.

I JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS FOR THESE TWO BUT NOT A LOT OF FIC AND ONE PIECE OF FANART.

They validated my student/teacher kink. Both super smart and driven, bringing out the best in each other. He respects her and she doesn't take bullshit from him. He is able to express parts of himself he keeps hidden away through her and she allows him to be himself with no expectations.

They love each other and fuck each other (equal parts fluff and passion) despite the fact that they're on opposite sides of the philosophy coin (AND ANGST AND BATTLING AND OCCASIONALLY SWORDFIGHTING) and the clear bottom of the relationship is so intensely jealous of everyone else in the top's life that it's unhealthily fascinating. Add in that I am fully capable of having this as my OTP whilst both members of the OTP screw and flirt with other people, and YES PLEASE.

One half of my OTP - let's be lazy and call him Character A - has led a very lonely life. His only friend was killed in front of his eyes, which turned him from a shy, gentle young man into a frosty recluse, lost in grief. Character B is the one who brought him out of that, gave him a sense of strength and a new chance at friendship, and in return A has saved B's life multiple times, becoming hopelessly devoted to him.

The dynamic between them is rather odd, since A is charming but socially awkward, and declares his love for B in ridiculously flowery terms. B, on the other hand, has a much tougher exterior (though he's also very devoted to his close friends). But there's a sense of trust between them, and understanding that runs deeper than the surface. They have potential for a heartwarming relationship, where each supports the other and helps him grow, overcoming the problems caused by their pasts. Plus they're both dorks who've never had a real romance before, and somehow that makes it extra sweet to me.

There's a deep sense of chemistry between them, of shared history, more than one element of the forbidden, and a lot of tragic circumstances, bad timing, betrayals and bad blood that prevented them from connecting in canon and was never resolved. Also they're both nonhuman (though they've both spent time as mortals,) and that opens up all sorts of interesting avenues in the relationship to be explored.

Both of their lives are utterly miserable. Before they met, neither one really had any intention of living for much longer, and everything they did reflected that. But then they did meet, and found value in the other's life, and saved each other. Their devotion to one another is intense and unquestionable, to the point where they turn their backs on literally everything else in their lives just to be together.

But... when their relationship is developing, you see them interact on a day-to-day basis and most of the time they just really act like friends. They meet each other as teenagers, and at that age it can be really easy to fall hard and fast for someone that just wouldn't be right for you in the long run- especially for those with so little else in their lives. But these two... it's just so easy to imagine what their life would be like ten or twenty years down the road. Even if they had nothing but each other, they'd still be happy.

(too bad canon loves tearing my heart to pieces so their chances for a happy ending are looking GRIM AS FUCK at the moment)

There's no substantial canon basis, which gives me all the room to sell it as I see it. The characters involved are two of my main fictional crushes and incredibly hot together - rangy/long hair/stubbly + beefy muscular/bearded. Both are down to earth get-along types with a strong respectful leader vibe and an unruly youthful past, and I imagine them with an amicable chemistry that complements each other's quirks. One is more reserved, straightforward, anal-retentive, and calm - the other more snarky, moody, and scheming. Basically, they are gruff gentlemanly srs bsness sex.
