"good fanart often takes far more effort than good fanfic."

I think that, while this isn't necessarily true, fandom often makes it seem that way simply because the threshold at which fanfic starts being considered 'good' in fandom is ridiculously low. Even the really "epic" stories by BNFs that get praised for the incredible characterization and plot are mediocre when compared with the works of truly talented writers. If your fandom is large enough, you can consider yourself extremely lucky if there is one, maybe two fanwriters who are somewhat talented, and even in those cases their stories are usually full of amateurish mistakes.

Huh. I'd have to disagree on the 'good writers' bit (although I might be a bit biased right now because my fandom has a lot of writers who are in their late twenties and older). I think that there are a decent amount of really talented writers who write fanfic, and I know that even a lot of the moderately talented writers that I read have better writing than some published stuff I have read.

Then again, I consider a lot of Big Name fics to be actually not all that great. I know this sounds cliche, but most of my favorite writers in fandom are not big name writers.

Yes, but considering what is getting published this way, being better than what is being published doesn't mean much, does it?
