Considering the demographic of tumblr versus demographic of Star Wars fans as a whole - I'm not surprised.

That's tumblr for you. Haven't checked this particular one, but what you describe doesn't surprise me.

It's Star Wars. What do you expect? That fandom is never happy unless it's making a big deal out of something ridiculous.

So true. There was an awesome sarcastic article about how all true Star Wars fans hate Star Wars :D

LOL thanks, just found it in one of my overflowing internet-pic folders and went OH GOD I HAVE TO UPLOAD THIS NOW because I don't have a Spidey icon and I cannot present myself properly on the internet if I don't have a Spidey icon. No credit to me though :)

Lies!

This makes more sense when I remember how freaking young Tumblr seems to be. They probably knew the prequels first, poor souls. Of course they're not as mortally offended by them as their elders. (And I'm 26, FWIW; you don't have to be middle-aged to have gotten attached to the originals before the prequels came out -- but that still makes me a good 10-12 years older than most of Tumblr, it seems).

It interesting to think about how demographics affect the attitude of the Star Wars fandom. A lot of kids in the '90's (like me) watched the rereleases in theater and had the VHSs of 4-6. I loved those movies. And, while I wasn't morally wounded by the awfulness of the prequels, it's hard for me to imagine liking them enough to hang out on the side of fandom that appreciates them more than the original trilogy.

Yep, same here. I even liked the prequels the first time around. Although I recently rewatched them and realized that they really are pretty bad. Like, objectively bad - not counting the wank over lack of continuity/midicholorians etc. Is it really down to the improved special effects and woobie!Anakin?

Pretty much, this. I saw the rereleases in theater and grew up with the original trilogy, so it's definitely a different/interesting demographic.

Actually, I think your and my generation were the most virulent haters of the new. The older fans sas it all when older, but for us, star wars was our childhood. That adds a layer that insures that the prequels would have sucked to us even if they were actually good.

It seems to be a prevalent thing in a lot of big fandoms. People seem to be unable to accept that they can be a fan of something without that something being THE masterpiece.

I...had no idea there was an active fandom. O____o Well...at least they're positive?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-01 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr fans like the prequels? Huh. I'll have to go follow some SW tumblrs.

I think I understand why

(Anonymous) 2012-08-01 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, Tumblr is young. I know that my younger brothers watched the prequels first; more than that, they grew up reading Jedi Apprentice and Jedi Quest novels. Tumblr is more visual, so of course there'd be more movie stuff, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are partially biased towards prequels because that's where all the kid-level stuff is. I really like the EU novels, but those are more adult; JA books ans JQ books and the Clone Wars cartoon are all the primary Star Wars stuff for younger kids.

Gotta admit, I myself do love some Jedi Apprentice. Not big on the prequel movies, but most of the fanfic I read is prequels (altho not Anakin/Padme)

Wow, there are people who don't like you diss something they're fans of! That's a novel thought.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
On Tumblr tags are only for positive shit, don't you know. But I'm glad there is a place where I don't have to see prequels were baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad cries everywhere.
