This makes more sense when I remember how freaking young Tumblr seems to be. They probably knew the prequels first, poor souls. Of course they're not as mortally offended by them as their elders. (And I'm 26, FWIW; you don't have to be middle-aged to have gotten attached to the originals before the prequels came out -- but that still makes me a good 10-12 years older than most of Tumblr, it seems).

It interesting to think about how demographics affect the attitude of the Star Wars fandom. A lot of kids in the '90's (like me) watched the rereleases in theater and had the VHSs of 4-6. I loved those movies. And, while I wasn't morally wounded by the awfulness of the prequels, it's hard for me to imagine liking them enough to hang out on the side of fandom that appreciates them more than the original trilogy.

Yep, same here. I even liked the prequels the first time around. Although I recently rewatched them and realized that they really are pretty bad. Like, objectively bad - not counting the wank over lack of continuity/midicholorians etc. Is it really down to the improved special effects and woobie!Anakin?

Pretty much, this. I saw the rereleases in theater and grew up with the original trilogy, so it's definitely a different/interesting demographic.

Actually, I think your and my generation were the most virulent haters of the new. The older fans sas it all when older, but for us, star wars was our childhood. That adds a layer that insures that the prequels would have sucked to us even if they were actually good.
