So, I don't really understand the kpop (and boyband) fandom(s) at all. Is it just about squeeing over hot guys? Is there a part of the fandom that cares about the music beyond the appearance of the band members? Legit questions here because I'm kind of curious what the atmosphere of the fandom is.

Anyway, he's a cute kid (emphasis on kid) and, yeah, you sound like a douche.

They're all basically mass-produced crappy pop, so no, you aren't going to get too many fans in there for the talent and artistry.

I haven't really found a part of fandom that was more about the music than how attractive the members are. Reasonable people also care about the music, but there's plenty of squeeing (not just over guys!) everywhere.

That's why I mostly follow the music and read stuff on Omona for current events and whatever.

But the music is often awesome without going into fandom! You should try some of it out (it is definitely not all the same).

Yes and no? That's a huge part of it, although like someone pointed out - it's not just the guys.

I do think that the kpop fandom tends to be a lot more focused on the actual singers/group members than any other music fandom, since these boys and girls are marketed to the bone. Some of them are on four/five/eighty shows at a time (acting in dramas, the whole group on a reality show i.e. Sesame Player, Idol Army, individual members hosting variety shows or being regular guests, entire groups or select members being one-time guests on shows that have them playing games, answering question, etc.), getting interviewed constantly, talking to the fans through social networking, being radio djs, modeling, doing special/fun/silly performances, participating in stand-up comedy acts... every idol has a billion roles, so just focusing on the music is rare.

Like [personal profile] visp said, most fans aren't in it for the talent and artistry. But it's not a bad thing in my opinion - what makes the Korean entertainment industry so lovable is that you don't get people taking themselves that seriously quite as often, whining about being an ~artiste~ and all that. It's entertainment, and they know it's entertainment. That's what makes it fun.

tl;dr - It's not always all about the looks, but it's rarely all about the music.

He is a cute kid...but I agree with OP in that he kind of sticks out beside the rest of the group. If you ever have a minute, look up "B.A.P Warrior" on youtube, and you might understand what I'm getting at. The concept of the group is this very manly, powerful "we could kick your ass" kind of thing.

About your question, the music is a huge part of fandom. Usually, people will hear a group's music and THEN watch all their tv shows (there's usually a lot, it's a big part of the industry) and get closer to the artist's members. At that point, they usually pick a favourite guy/girl (known as your "bias") to squee over. So music and members' hotness/personality go hand in hand.

Sorry for the tl;dr but secrets are almost never about my fandoms lol

Frankly, the vast majority have mediocre singing skills, and they're singing generic pop. People get sucked in by the idols themselves, and the relationship with the fans, and the whole show aspect of it.

(I will comment that there are several idols I am fond of, mainly because they are actually good singers. They're not terribly popular, because they're not necessarily the hottest....)
