Yes and no? That's a huge part of it, although like someone pointed out - it's not just the guys.

I do think that the kpop fandom tends to be a lot more focused on the actual singers/group members than any other music fandom, since these boys and girls are marketed to the bone. Some of them are on four/five/eighty shows at a time (acting in dramas, the whole group on a reality show i.e. Sesame Player, Idol Army, individual members hosting variety shows or being regular guests, entire groups or select members being one-time guests on shows that have them playing games, answering question, etc.), getting interviewed constantly, talking to the fans through social networking, being radio djs, modeling, doing special/fun/silly performances, participating in stand-up comedy acts... every idol has a billion roles, so just focusing on the music is rare.

Like [personal profile] visp said, most fans aren't in it for the talent and artistry. But it's not a bad thing in my opinion - what makes the Korean entertainment industry so lovable is that you don't get people taking themselves that seriously quite as often, whining about being an ~artiste~ and all that. It's entertainment, and they know it's entertainment. That's what makes it fun.

tl;dr - It's not always all about the looks, but it's rarely all about the music.
