I also am not a huge fan of the triangle but it's not too bad. I am glad she went with Peeta in the end.

I dislike that argument because I felt the tone of the epilogue was so disheartening and empty that it made perfect sense. One of the reasons that I considered Katniss such a unique and strong character was that she was beaten by the experience. She wasn't a superhero capable of overcoming anything. She was a person who had everything she cared about stripped away from her in a cruel and violent manner, and she was deeply affected by it.
This, to me, is what makes Katniss a feminist character. She wasn't weak, nor was she impossibly strong.
Because of this, I feel liker her disconnection to her life in the epilogue made having kids almost an arbitrary decision to her. And even if she loved them, they didn't exactly bring light into her life.
Sorry, been holding that in for a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-01 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, there is at least one point during the series where it becomes abundantly clear that she IS thinking about kids (when she talks about Peeta's children playing the The Meadow, at the same time she is realising that she would be "irreparably damaged" if he died) but refuses to take the thought further because the Capitol was still in control. I'm usually one for skipping the Babies Ever After trope, but all through the books I had the impression that Katniss did, on some level, desire children of her own. When her traumas are dealt with to some degree, when there is some sense of security (money, a suppportive partner even if it does veer into codependence) and safety (no Hunger Games or political threat), then it makes sense she would take that step.
