Potentially TMI ~menstruation question

[personal profile] la_petite_singe 2012-08-01 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
...but we're (almost) all girls here, right? Has anyone ever tried one of those menstrual cups? I never have, but I'm somewhat curious. It seems like it'd be...messy. Share your experiences!

I'd like to know too. I've never seen them in stores (mind, I haven't exactly looked hard), and I've only heard about them on the internet.

I see them at Walgreens all the time. I just haven't tried them because they're more expensive than tampons and I didn't want to gamble on trying and failing to use them (seems complicated to remove them properly)

A lot of companies that sell them online have good return policies because of this; they just let you mail them back if it doesn't work out. Removal annoyed me at first but it's not that big a deal to get the hang of, and it's worth the initial outlay to not have to buy tampons ever again.

I love them. It's no messier than tampons once you've got the hang of it, maybe less so. The part I found hard at first was learning how to take it out properly without causing pain or mess.

I've tried a menstrual cup thing that isn't washable and you throw away? idk how else to describe it, but I got a free sample. You basically put it in there and it lasted a lot longer, like 12 hours.

It wasn't for me, personally, because it felt funny at first, but I imagine it's just like tampons in that you have to get used to them.

I've had my menstrual cup for about four years now, and I love it. Aside from forgetting it once or twice, I have not gone back since.

I will say, you do have to get comfortable with yourself to be able to use it. You basically have to be able to get your fingers to the depth of your cervix and be able to manipulate it slightly while its inside you. You get the hang of it quickly, but you will get blood on your hands.

Clean up is really easy, you just dump it and wipe it out when you're on the go, and fully clean it when you're home. I sleep with it in, exercise, swim, everything. I occasionally get overflow on the first day or two of my cycle, but if I just keep in mind to empty it more frequently, it's all good.

I cannot recommend them highly enough. A lot less waste and mess, a lot cheaper, and a lot more comfortable.

I also use the disposable Instead Soft Cups and recommend them. I think I'm a little small, so they don't always fit 100% for me but it's better than tampons and pads. I want to look into reusable ones, but for the time being, yes cups get a thumbs up from me.

Have you been to [livejournal.com profile] menstrual_cups? They have tons of reviews and questions and whatnot.

I use a diva cup brand, and it works fine for me. Depending on how heavy my flow is, I'd have to dump and rinse/wipe it every 8-12 hours. And that's probably the only time it can get messy tbh. If you ever use one, you will potentially understand the unbreakable string of period goo between your vagina and the contents of the cup (or toilet if you've already dumped it in there. So. Annoying.

Still, because you can keep it in longer than a tampon (12 hours, yo), I only really clean it when I take a shower in the morning (keep it in overnight), and a second shower in the evening (well, more like bottom shower since it'd be a waste of water to full-body shower twice a day). Any mess is dealt by the showerhead and the drain.

Also, seeing your period blood in a silicone cup with handy measuring markers is hilarious imo. And it works wonders for training you to be unsquicked by body fluids.

So, I used to not bat an eye at body fluids but now I get lightheaded just seeing one drop of blood. I don't think mooncups are for me :-[
