Ugh. SO much agreed. I mean, I do like "serious" topics and genuinely deep emotions and stuff, but it should be rooted in crack. Like, the world the characters live in should be at it's heart insane and cracky, and while you can extrapolate from and add layers and complexity to that crack in order to explore some genuinely serious subject matter, that should be the exception not the rule.

For example, some of my favorite things include the Fall of Hank Pym, where Hank pretty much goes insane due to self-esteem issues over not being that badass an Avenger and stress over being a superhero and guilt over ULTRON, which briefly leads to a detour into some pretty dark and mature issues, but it springs from cracky superheroics and that's what it returns to in the end. Also things like alcoholism with Iron Man, or the child abuse issues and emotional problems with the Hulk, or all the oppression/discrimination stuff surrounding the X-Men. Those are relatable and recognizable issues, but they are still firmly embedded in an insane superhero world that is quite different from ours in which people have different expectations for what is reasonable behavior.

So yeah, fundamentally, the default setting still needs to be lavishly ludicrous and insane. Because if you seriously try to put those kinds of superheroes in a world that has the same issues and tendencies and mindsets as the real world, you will wind up looking like a gigantic pretentious moron and the Fridge Logic will utterly kill your story. Superhero comics is all metaphor — you can still have genuine feelings and relatable problems and behavior that follows a rational train of thought given the setting, but you cannot pretend that they are identical to what would happen in the real world.

Um..wow I really tl;dr'ed all over the place there...

So much! Most of my favourite Superhero stories are older (like 70's and 80's era older), but I think the best recent representation of what I, personally, like in Superhero comics is the Blue Beetle (III) run that happened prior to the New 52. It had well developed characters and some more serious stories, but it also had moments like Jaime's dark power fantasy being...him as a dentist. It was fun and hilarious and relatable and cracky, and I loved it. I like the Blue Beetle stuff from the new 52 (the issues I've read anyway. I haven't gotten to the latest one yet.) okay, but it just doesn't compare to the sheer fun we had before.

Oh yes, Blue Beetle was just made of awesome. :) It subverted so many dumb cliches about what was "needed" to make a character or situation interesting and relatable. Like, you know, most people relate to being happy and having fun and thinking cool things are cool once in a while...
