Are you the OP? Because I didn't get that interpretation from the secret. There was nothing in there about being aware that it's often executed terribly, just more that they're aware people get upset at the trope. Knowing people get upset and understanding why they're upset are two different things.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
no I'm not but it sounded like it's a kink for the OP to me and other people can't get that it's a kink, not something she expects to be real or something. like rape fantasies. obv nobody wants that irl and everyone realizes its bad but people still have problems with it. that doesnt make rape fantasies awful awful all the time forever but some people will insist that

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-02 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it's obvious we had two different interpretations of the secret.

And I'd like to point out that I never said liking the trope/kink was bad, just that I think it's important to be aware of the problems within the trope.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It is NOT A FUCKING KINK.

It is a specific form of a dynamic that is very offensive.

Quit trying to write it off as a kink because you feel bad, OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
as much as you insist I'm the OP, it's not true. keep going though

and you can have a kink for problematic dynamics. it happens. nazi kink, abuse kink, rape kink i could keep going. i don't have them myself but people do and as long as it's fiction and nobody is trying to force them IRL idgaf

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Except they admit it's at least fucking problematic.

The OP is literally saying they want to use seme/uke, words that homosexuals find offensive, because ~*it's fiction*~.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
seme/uke are trope names that describe certain things

how do you talk about those tropes without using those words?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Op here: that's exactly my point: what exactly are you supposed to say when you're expressing a kink for the specific genre that uses that specific trope .

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
idk you could try telling the angry anon that you're deeply ashamed and a bad person w/e but theyd probably tell you it's not enough and you're not ashamed enough and you don't realize how truly horrible you are

so it probably won't work

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-03 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's actually a good question. I've only ever seen the seme/uke description used in anime, but I've seen the trope all over the place. There's got to be a general term for it that's not so offensive.
Edited 2012-08-03 00:12 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Op here: Oh, I mean specifically in anime/manga.

I wouldn't call it seme/uke in other genres.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-03 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Gotcha.

I don't know, the more I think about this the more I feel like you really shouldn't get upset that other people get upset. Like...you have to admit that the seme/uke dynamic is offensive to a lot of people, and that's okay. It's okay that they're upset and it's okay that you like it, but you can't expect people not to get upset over something that has such an offensive history and connotations attached to it.

+1

They describe extremely offensive stereotypes.

There are perfectly good words that are NEUTRAL and don't carry all the baggage.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
like what. describe a yaoi seme in perfectly good neutral words that don't take a tldr paragraph

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Now that OP has specified that they like it 24/7 and not just in the bedroom?

Dominant personality and submissive personality. Perfectly neutral, but you get who is in charge and who is submissive right off the bat. Magic!

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
that doesn't hardly cover all of standard yaoi tropes, try again

use seme/uke, words that homosexuals find offensive,

lol really...

Most of us don't care.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
So because you don't care you're just erasing and dismissing those that do get offended?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
So because you're offended you're saying you speak for everyone? It offends you. It doesn't offend "homosexuals."

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I said most. Thus I'm not erasing shit.

yeah

I pretty much assumed they meant "top" and "bottom" (but agree/d that the portrayals can be annoyingly narrow and unrealistic) until like... this thread

tbh

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
See, to me using "top" and "bottom" are totally different than "uke" and "seme". Maybe that's where the problem in discussion comes from - the different interpretations of the words.

[personal profile] stainless 2012-08-03 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Some of it, yeah.

But I still worry that part of it may be that people are really leery of feminine male bottoms (and I'd say feminine female ones, too), and I think part of that can be steeped in homophobia and misogyny.

I like how there is one (1) anon that is pissed off about yaoi. and she is scraping as far as her poor little fingers can reach to show how RIGHTEOUS HER ANGER IS

I have the same interpretation of the secret, and my mind is boggling at people who don't see it that way tbh.
