Rock on, OP! I was always told that I was a lot like Daria in high school, too, but most people who know me now would never believe it. I'm way too hyper and (superficially) open with my emotions. I can still bring the snark like woah, though.

People think you were like Daria in high school (but you weren't, you were awesomely popular and popularly awesome - completely not defensive there, yo) and you admire Daria and want to act like her...but only in private? So no one thinks you were some kind of friendless non-social loser? Like the character you admire?

I don't see where you're getting the idea that OP was "awesomely popular". They describe themselves as a "cool MOFO", but that doesn't necessarily translate into "everyone else thought I was cool." It could just mean that OP isn't ashamed of the way they were, and thinks of themselves as a "cool MOFO" just the way they are without needing validation from others.

I don't say this to start a fight, but because I've described myself as cool, awesome, and even epic before, but I am not now nor have I ever been one of the "popular kids". I just happen to like myself fine without needing to be.

Uh, I don't think the secret says any of that.
From what I get, people wouldn't believe OP if they said they were like Daria in high school, which means they're now socializing enough to be thought to have been part of the popular kids in high school.

The only way I can understand how you interpret the secret is if you think OP is still in high school. Which obviously... is not the case.

Also I don't see Daria as a friendless non-social loser. She had at least 2 good friends, that's way better than a dozen of shallow pals who will vanish the moment you're not funny enough.

i've thought this for years...at first i actually thought there was something wrong with me because of it, like hiding from people or lying was a bad thing - but i got over that

now i simply recognise that others are more comfortable being able to hold on to their own beliefs about who someone is
