Me too, short of him killing Jesse, Hank or Walt Jr.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Or Skyler or Saul. :(

Yes. Never Saul! I love Saul.

In a sense, I know how you feel, OP. He was written so sympathetically, and Bryan Cranston does such an amazing job making Walt both dangerous and downtrodden. It's hard to look at the wasted potential in his "previous life" and not want more for him. I think he's past the point of no return, though, and now I'm just hoping he doesn't get Jesse or his family killed. I'm almost positive he's going to kill Mike and I won't be able to handle it. :(

Really? :\ In what sense? Like, I'm fascinated by him and don't want him to die (until the very end, maybe) and I'm invested in the story, but he is truly a terrible person who does appalling things. Villains/morally gray people are always my fave, but root for him...?

I don't think Walt is even as bad as Tony Soprano or Vic Mackey.

Even his worst act -- poisoning a child -- was A.) done to save him and his family and B.) done in such a way that the kid would be saved. He went out of his way to protect Hank from Gus even though Hank posed a threat a to him. If he was truly terrible he would have let Gus kill him.

I mean I think this season will definitely have him fully "break bad" but I can't see him as a terrible person just yet.

The "for his family" stuff is bullshit, though. It's always been bullshit. It was bullshit way back in season one when he knowingly and repeatedly passed up Gretchen and Elliot's money in favor of pursuing the life of a meth cook, knowing how dangerous it was. Every act he's done to protect his family since then has been making up for his repeated lapses in judgment for the sake of pride. (Another example: he wouldn't have to protect Hank from Gus in s4 if he hadn't done his whole "Oh, but you know Gale wasn't REALLY Heisenberg" song and dance and gotten him involved in the case again.)

+1

I love Walter White as a character. He is fascinating, well writing,, incredibly acted; I truly believe he is one of the greatest fictional characters of this generation.

That said, he's not a good person, and in many ways he hasn't been since he passed up that money in favor of cooking meth. I think the writers very deliberately made sure his first experience with the business went terribly wrong. There's no excuse -- it's not like he didn't realize how dangerous it could be, given that he had to kill someone on his first outing as a cook.

He cares about his family, yes. But he cares about his pride more. That has always been his tragic flaw, and it's what has gotten him to this point. He's a great character, and before this season I even still rooted for him. But I've never really SYMPATHIZED with him, because he brought this all upon himself time and time again.

Questioning your choices, but okay. Good luck with that, you're gonna need it.

I still can't get over the fact that he's Malcom's Dad.

Same here! The other day, Frankie Muniz was guesting on a radio show and he was talking about how he's never watched an episode of "Breaking Bad" even though he and Bryan Cranston are still relatively close and he felt bad about it.

I can't wait for his ass to die, tbh.
