If he's alive, I can see it being a great story (if Fury did a cover-up, I'd assume it would cause the Avengers to be mega-pissed and make it clear they're not going to be SHIELD's lackeys, as Steve and Tony discussed).

If he's dead-dead, I can also see it being a great story, because he's kind of the symbolic guy-who-brought-them-together thing that made them a team whose memory they'll be honoring when they fight, a bit of a Yinsen/Erksine-type figure.

I don't care either way. Or more accurately, I'm jazzed for either scenario. I'm drowning blissfully and drinking in every drop of this joy-inducing fandom that's so jam-packed with fifty million fascinating possibilities and cruising at its peak of canon perfection and still so unspoiled and glorious.

However, if he's alive, I will be SO disappointed if he doesn't tear Fury a new one for getting blood all over that collection of (vintage!) Captain America cards he spent so long collecting.

Headcanon about the cards: Those weren't Phil's. They were Nick's. ;)

Fury: "Are you kidding me? If I destroyed his cards he would have haunted my ass from beyond the grave until the day I died. And after New Mexico, I'm not banking on this short-sighted theory that ghosts don't exist."

Also, if he's dead, then the Avengers have a reason to be called "the Avengers." As in, they actually have someone they're avenging.
