...In retrospect, maybe younger-self-me did the right thing on not encouraging or responding enthusiastically to the popular kids that would be kind of flirty/suddenly interested in me out of nowhere.

Back then I was all like "no, you blew it, they wanted to be friends, what's wrong with you", but looking back on it and remembering what those kids were like even with their friends, I think I dodged a bullet, even if the overtures of friendship/flirtation were genuine.

It can be really hard to tell sometimes whether someone's honestly trying to be friends with you, making fun of you, or talking to you because they feel sorry for you. I say again: hooray for trust issues!

But yeah, either way it probably worked out for the best. None of the people who used to do that to me were people I'd actually want to be friends with if they were sincere!
