Could you educate me plz though? I am rather poorly read on the (jesus christ boring as fuck even before OMD) modern Spider-Man comics and I just suddenly got interested in knowing wtf that story was.

Okay. Quick version: A storyline ago, Peter explored the more mystical side of his power. Apparntly, he's not the first "spider-man"; that shit goes back to Anansi. There have been many others in history whom represented the "totem" of the spider. It's pointed out to Peter that he seems to fight an awful lot of people who embody some other animal, and that's not a coincidence. At any rate, Peter's just the latest (not all, however, have been prominent or heroic, just embodyments of "spider").
Enter Morlun. A sort of natural predator of Totems (not just spiders) who ate them. Peter pretty much get's his ass handed too him until he poisons himself with radiation asan attempt to spoil Morluns meal (correctly reasoning that he got his powers from radiation, and might survive this, but Morlun would be wrecked, being all about "purity of essence"), but the guy showed up for a round two and Peter's mortally wounded. When Mary Jane is threatened, his forray's into the mystical understanding of his powers sort of click, and he deliberately lets the "man/spider" balance fall sharply to one side. The fanged creature Peter becomes manages to fuck Morlun up and mortally wound him right back, but while apparanently dying in the process.
However, since he's now more spider then man, he takes on more spider traits, including a trait like some spiders to molt and heal wounds this way (not entirely bullshit: http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/evo-eco-lab/2011/09/27/missing-legs-not-much-of-a-problem-for-spiders/) Pete wasn't as dead as it seemed, he'd just shut down and later burst out of his own dead husk some time later. What came out was more human looking again, though his powers were up a notch. Moreso then the web shooters however, was his spider sense and the way his "grip" worked. He could now stick with any part of his body and not just his hands and feet (which meant unless he was unconscious his mask wouldn't come off) and his spider sense was up a notch: now like a real spider he could feel vibrations through his webs and his overall range was up by a lot.
These enhancements all dissipated after one more day, though I think he could still do the spider grip, so it might be more like he forgot some of it/didn't "learn" it due to the alterations to history.

Oh okay, see, I just read a kind of scan-summary thing that spanned a large portion of this arc with lots of summarizing text in between the scans so the specifics were explained kinda sketchily. At least I wasn't, er, completely wrong about what went down, just wrong about how it went down. The summarizer must've been being sarcastic about how the whole molting/husk thing worked. Now I do remember actually reading an issue or two from the very beginning of this but didn't care about it enough to read more. Bleh, rubs me the wrong way but whatever.
