In response to 2), if the writers worked the plot in any way that would turn Natasha into "the Girlfriend", then they would be seriously off the track on how to adapt the Winter Soldier storyline. Because honestly, the story really should be about Steve's relationships with different people, and how he tries to help Bucky. I love the Bucky X Nat ship, but I think that if Natasha is in the film, her role should mainly revolve around being a Shield agent and having personal knowledge of what the Winter Soldier is capable of.

It'd be fun if they hinted at a past relationship, but I can't see them rekindling a romance in this film since it would distract from Steve . If they do, I would really want it to be in a dedicated Black Widow movie, so that the relationship could be properly established in addition to what else makes her awesome.

I always just have that fear when I see women in movies though. I can't help it. It's mostly because I've been disappointed so many times.

Technically, couldn't they just do UST between them? They could adapt it so that this is the first time the two have met. I actually hope they don't put in Natasha's "I've lived a long ass time and stayed young" back story. I don't particularly like the reasoning behind why it exists.

But you're right. Too much and it will detract from Steve. I will cling to that hope.

Yeah, that's true, I have no idea how the movies are going to portray Natasha's backstory, since it is so convoluted. There were a lot of hints in The Avengers. but they could still go a number of ways. That could be a very interesting take if it were their first face-to-face meeting, but at this point it's all speculation.

Hey, can I ask what hints you saw about her past that I may have missed? Because I haven't actually read the comics. Because what I got was: 1)Killed a lot of people. 2)At one point didn't work for SHIELD. 3)Was probably a bad guy at that time. 4)Clint offered her a job at SHIELD instead of killing her.

Was there anything I missed?

I'm can't claim to be the best expert on the comics, there is a ton of reading I'm slowly catching up on, but from what I do know and caught in the movie: 1) The scene in India, when Bruce asks about the young girl "Does SHIELD recruit them that young?" and Natasha replies "I did", hints that Natasha has been trained from a very young age. 2) Later when Clint is recovering from Loki's mind-control has his "You know what it's like to be unmade?" speech. Natasha replies "You know that I do", which is in reference to her personal experience being brainwashed back when she was a Russian spy.

Actually, if you are curious to learn more about Black Widow in the comics and in general, there is this excellent blog on Tumblr I would recommend. The mod very clearly loves and respects the character, and writes very thoughtful discussions.
