Part of it might be that I like things in one place - Tumblr seems to be spread out and very fast paced, whereas LJ or DW or somesuch you'd have all of the discussion on one entry & within the comments right on that page.

I honestly have never seen a post on Tumblr that contained much streamlined discussion. It's all hashtags and quoting and posts as replies. But maybe I just didn't explore enough.

I'm glad that you're enjoying the move to Tumblr. I'm not saying Tumblr is evil or there's no joy in it, I'm just saying that from my perspective if you don't like the style and format of Tumblr then fandom is pretty much dead (compared to what it used to be).

I can see that definitely being part of the problem with adjusting. One does need to keep on top of things. Which can be tough, of course.

I haven't run into much of the hashtags conversation... most of it comes to me in a thread format, much like this... could be a difference in reading style there.

I know fandom on LJ and DW has slowed down considerably, but I have to wonder if eventually the shine won't wear off and tumblr will be like every other site with a heavy fandom contingent. There is a novelty factor here too.

...

HOW? Seriously, how in the hell are you seeing coherent, threaded conversations on Tumblr? Because that has never happened to me there, and if I could follow things that way I'd actually use the damn site, so ... how?

Please?

I, uh, was wondering the same thing but I've already outed myself as a tumblr failure so I didn't want to push it. But yeah, I apparently am doing Tumblr totally wrong because I've never actually seen any coherent threaded conversations taking place.

I know. I'll see people talk about these great discussions they see on Tumblr, and I've never seen any. I don't know if I don't know how to look for it, or if it's just that it doesn't happen in my fandoms.

And I've heard conflicting things, too. Like, I've seen people say that people will reblog stuff and add their own commentary. But a while back, someone told me that I shouldn't add my own commentary if I reblog something, because that looks stupid to people. If I want to comment on what I'm reblogging, I'm "supposed" to use the tags.

But I don't want to comment on stuff using tags. #i don't want #to communicate #like this #when there's a text box #and i can just use that #ARGH

I just don't get it. I like Tumblr all right, and I do enjoy the gifs and images, but I wish I knew how I was supposed to use it.

Tumblr isn't killing fandom, but it is killing text-based interactions like discussions and fic.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-08-05 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
That's what my fandom interaction used to be all about, so it's killed fandom for me.
