Re: Can I Just Say That A Lot of This Thread...

I'm just gonna quote something my friend on facebook (a homeschooling mother) put up, from Free Your Children:

You've heard this argument before, I'm sure:

'Unfortunately, they have to get used to being bullied. How else will they get along in the real world?'

What a crock. Sure, bullies exist in the grown-up world, but an adult has the freedom to not associate with them. We can walk away. We can ignore them. We have recourse. If a friend, family member, or acquaintance is acting like a jerk, an adult does not have to continue socializing with them. We can avoid them. A child cannot avoid his tormentors while he attends school.

Workplaces have rules against bullying. Disciplinary action can be taken to protect employees from aggression. The oppressed can seek help in this 'real world'. Schools, as we're all painfully aware, do not do an adequate job of sheltering children from predators.

Kids learn too quickly in life that not everyone is nice. From other children at community playgrounds. From adults who dismiss their feelings and ignore their needs. From their own experiences in the 'real world'. Why immerse them in an environment (school) where they cannot escape those who would physically and emotionally assault them? In the 'real world', they can seek help from a parent or a sibling or another caring individual. Or they can walk away. Schools do not afford them that same option.

I would like to say that I believe you, and in an ideal world, I think you would be right.

Unfortunately, I have learned that many adults do not grow out of the bullying behavior they exhibited as children and that shit I thought was far behind me on the playgrounds of my youth is very much still a part of my life.

While it is true that jobs do have protections against bullying, a lot of times that doesn't protect you. I'm in that situation right now. I have a boss who hates me and a VP who allows her to get away with damaging people professionally to satisfy her grudges. I have done everything I can to protect myself, including starting a confidential file with HR on what I see as troubling aspects of her behavior, but there's not much else i can do. She fired my best friend because she didn't like her and the only recourse my friend has is to sue her and a lot of people aren't going to do that for a lot of reasons, including lack of money, not willing to go through the anxiety, and the difficulty it would cause in getting future jobs. If she sued our boss, even if she won, she wouldnt' work in this state again. :(

so, um, I guess I have no comment on the home schooling thing. :)

Ugh, yes. In highschool I had almost my whole class telling me I 'smelled of cat piss', constantly. And would laugh/insult me, right infront of the fucking teacher (I didn't even have a fucking cat, nor did I smell like one. Hell, even the nurse said I didn't-but I'll get to that) so instead of telling her class to shut the fuck up and start doing her work, she sends me down to the nurse. Because I was disrupting it. By fucking being there. The nurse said I didn't smell like anything negative, and couldn't understand why they were doing it. Yeah, I fucking bet.

God. These children really should be held to harsher standards, because school is something important, but also something you can't escape from. Stop going to school? Either your parents get arrested, or you get put into juvie. Either or, until you're of legal age. (Which in some states is six months into being 18, ffs!!)
